Bengals and former Steelers LB James Harrison will try to complete a deal this week. Harrison more signable than Karlos Dansby at this time.

Is our goal to have no linebackers who can cover anyone? I'd be happy about this if we didn't resign Maualuga.

Yeah, I wouldn't sign Harrison just because he's cheap. The team can afford the better linebackers like Smith or Dansby.

When you look at the way we have viewed the SLB position recently, adding guys like Dontay Moch, Brandon Joiner and Aaron Maybin while keeping Rey at MLB it seems pretty clear we want the SLB position to almost be a 3-4 rush LB, someone who can get after the QB without their hand in the dirt. I think that's the role Harrison would play.

I'd prefer Dansby though.

I like the move if it happens.

Everyone seems to be saying he cant play SLB because he cant cover any more. Who knows what Zim has figured for him, maybe just a straight 3rdD rusher ?

Maybe the Allen move last week was to free up some more cash to pay Harrison.

If Harrison plays at a decent level and has an influence in the Pittsburgh games someway, this could prove a master stroke.

Wonder how he'll get on with Whit ?

I'm not totally sure how I feel about this. On the plus side, Harrison would likely bring a great locker room presence to the team. He's mean, intimidating, and a professional, and having him around would likely really benefit Malaluga and Burifict. Also, he's still likely going to be an effective blitzing linebacker who the opposing team would have to account for at all times. He brings an intimidation factor to the defense that I believe it's currently lacking. He should have too much coverage responsibilities playing SAM.

On the downside, this means Rey is our MLB. I don't like that one bit. The only LB we have who is good in coverage is Lamur (Tez is okay). I'm afraid TEs are going to continue to scorch us next season if we don't draft a good coverage LB. Injuries and age are concerns with Harrison, and just how effective would he be in a 4-3? It remains to be seen, I guess.

All in all, I guess I'm okay with this but I would have rather had Dansby. Harrison should be plenty motivated after being cut after such a productive career. I think his attitude rubbing off on some of the other guys would be a good thing, and he should still be an intimidating factor on the field. But I continue to have serious concerns about our linebacker's coverage abilities, and signing Harrison does nothing to ease those concerns.

I'm really hoping we can bring in Harrison/Dansby, Rhodes, and A. Smith before the draft. Rhodes is probably a longshot (hell, Smith may be too), but if we can bring in all three, it leaves the draft wide open. They could literally go in any direction they liked in that case... if we don't sign Smith and Rhodes, we're going to have to get a safety and OT early.

What, you wouldn't consider the signing of former Brown TE Alex Smith significant? Laughing

I actually have the same feeling. I'd love Rhodes but don't think it'll happen. I'm 50/50 on Smith. If he isn't signed by the draft I don't think it happens. I'm hoping Smith is re-signed just so it would give the Bengals more flexibility in the draft, but not if he continues to want to be paid like an elite LT.

Maybe we can sign Hines Ward as our number 2 receiver.

I am starting to really warm to the idea of Harrison more. I think he can cover, he just wasn't asked to do it with Pittsburgh. Will he be a great cover LB? Probably not. Will he give us way more pass rush than Lawson did? Absolutely. Will he give us an added edge against the two teams the national media says the road to the division crown runs through? Unquestioned, as he has now been cut by both teams.

Only if he is allowed to break the jaw of our first round pick again

Not a fan, our LB's have been flat footed in the passing game for the last two years. Its the reason Houston has beaten us in the playoffs the last two, not a good move! Hopefully it works out and he kills the Ravens and Steelers this year!
