Wow. Bills traded LB Kevin Sheppard to Colts for LB Jerry Hughes. Rare young player-for-player deal.

Uh, interesting. Haven't both been pretty bad during their careers?

Sheppard isn't "bad", it was more of a slow start. He's been steadily improving as our starting MLB, nothing special. I guess the staff doesn't think he fits in our new defensive scheme.

Hughes slowly started improving as well. Similar to Maybin who flashed something with the Jets. We'll see if Hughes can build on that or if he goes back to being a non-factor like Maybin did.

Probably shouldn't take too many shots at Maybin considering he's on the Bengals roster now... Laughing

Just mentioned his name in the cut/traded thread yesterday along with Donald Brown. #calledit

And don't forget, who was the defensive coordinator Maybin played well under in New York? Pettine. Maybe he can get something out of Hughes for our sake.

Sheppard was pretty bad and along with Aaron Williams, he was on my list of players I didn't want to see in anything more than depth roles this season. Glad we got rid of him but this trade is more of a hope for both teams that each LB can be better with a change of scenery which could work for both of them. So I like it. Hoping Hughes does something for us, even as a situational pass-rusher. Maybe Sheppard turns his game around for the Colts too. I like that Hughes is a first-rounder. He had to have been seen as something.

Makes me think the Bills will be signing Dansby soon, despite the quietness on that front and the reports that the draft could have changed our interest. Aside from Alonso, a rookie, we don't have anyone at MLB/ILB and Dansby would make us a better team. It just remains to be seen why we haven't signed him yet, if we even do. Could be money or the Bills might love Alonso enough but still, with our hybrid scheme, we just don't have any other ILBs of starting caliber on our roster and we'll need another one. That's why I think Dansby will eventually sign if the money's right.

Knew there had to be a reason why the Colts didn't look to ILB during the draft. Jerrell Freeman was a find, but thus far (from what I've seen) Mario Harvey hasn't flashed much of anything special, Pat Angerer can't stay healthy, and Kavell Conner is a pretty poor scheme fit.

Good trade for Buffalo. I still like Hughes a bit.

It doesn't seem they view him as a starter, he played 11 games last season but only started 3.

he missed the first 4 games with a foot injury and was never 100% all season

I wanted Hughes over Best.

Dont think Hughes has been too good, but at least he's still playing.

I don't know if you can really even call Sheppard a bust. He was a third-round pick. Of course we expected to see him become a decent starter at least but at least he wasn't selected in the first or second, where those picks are much more valuable and those players have far greater expectations and likelihoods to carve out good NFL careers when they enter the League.
