Brown and out: Pats can't agree with veteran
By John Clayton, ESPN.com
John Clayton Archive
New England Patriots wide receiver Troy Brown, who sacrificed incentive bonus money to help out in the injury-depleted secondary, failed to reach a new contract agreement with the team and will become a free agent after midnight on Tuesday.
His contract had an option bonus of $2.5 million due Tuesday along with a $2.5 million base salary. The team wasn't going to pay him $5 million this season for cap reasons so each side was trying to work on the right number.
That didn't happen, so he is available to any other team wanting to sign him. Brown has had a remarkable 12-year career that included a Pro Bowl season in 2001 and several key seasons during the team's run to three Super Bowls in four years.
Brown symbolized the team concept because of his willingness to be good on offense, special teams and defense. He was the Patriots punt returner. The big story this year happened during training camp when he was asked to try the cornerback position.
Injuries to starting cornerbacks Tyrone Poole and Ty Law forced Brown to become the team's nickel cornerback, which he played surprisingly well. _________________

I think the free agent market will test him, he was cut by New England, just remember the reason all of these guys are free agents, is because their team let them be....having said that, he would be an improvement over Lance"in my pants" Frazier at c b...

He was our number 4 WR...
AND he got 3 picks...not bad for a WR playing NB...if you want to compare, Newman got 4 picks...and he also started on defense...
He is a versatile player that BP might try to bring in...I wouldn't mind if he did...I would love him back with the Pats but I doubt it will happen... _________________

Damn, Kraft is a ruthless business man! I wouldn't want him as a friend, but I sure wouldn't mind having him as a GM (after Jerry retires, of course)
But you think they would have rewarded him for his sacrifices with a contract! |

He already was being overpayed for his production rate...All he had to do was renegotiate. He knew he was going to get cut. The 4th string WR was going to carry a 5 million dollar ammount against the cap this upcoming season... _________________
