I know this is a Steelers Forum but the Pirates season is starting and obviously a lot of us guys on here are Pirates fans and have long awaited opening day this year because of the long winter in Pittsburgh this year. I thought it would be nice to get some good discussion about the Buccos.

Will this FINALLY be the year they go over .500 or will they continue with the most embarrassing streak in sports?

I'll start off with my prediction. I think we will go 85-77 get 3rd in the division and just miss the 2nd wildcard.

Some of the keys for this year are..

McCutchen needs to continue his dominance

Pedro needs to add plate discipline and consistency

Starting Pitching needs to step up and pitch up to expectations all season long

The Bullpen needs to be solid again

I am so tired of having to think of that streak over and over. A over .500 season would relieve so much and I really do think we will break the streak this year. I want to get into the play-offs and i think we have the team to do it but in such a tough division I think we will come up a little short. We just have to play up to our potential all year long. I'm a little concerned with the consistency of our starting rotation and bullpen.

I'm not allowed to make that .500 prediction anymore. I predicted it for the last 2 years on another forum and I get beat on for it Laughing

So for the sake of good luck, I predict the Pirates will NOT finish over .500 this year!

I thought about it but tickets on stubhub were about twice the price they normally are plus I don't know if I want to take a day off work since the already long weekend for me.

I hate how we have an off day tuesday in the middle of the cubs series at home then we have to fly out to california tursday evening on no off day to play on friday. It makes zero sence.

I'm really excited to see what Marte can do for the entire season up in Pittsburgh. I'm so glad that he wasn't traded to Cleveland for Choo when there were rumors flying around. Made no sense to trade a talent like him for a quick fix. He's part of the future and the future is now for him.

Alvarez is one of the streakiest hitters around. When he gets on a roll he looks unstoppable. If he can get a little more consistent and cut down on the strikeouts he can be one of the best third baseman around.

Yea +1 on both points.

I would of been ticked if we traded Marte for Choo. I'd rather have Marte than Choo this year. The only thing that sucks though is Choo went to the Reds. Marte is faster, better defensively, has a better arm and overall more upside than Choo. I wonder how Marte will do as an everyday lead-off hitter. I think he has a little more power than most lead-off hitters and would be more of a 2 hole guy as he matures. But McCutchen was a lead-off guy his first couple years and looked good there. To me Marte reminds me of a less polished version of McCutchen. Not the way he swings the bat but his high energy and speed as well as a good stick. The only main difference I see in the two is McCutchen has better power 25-30 HR guy a year and Marte is more of a 10-20 HR guy a year. Also Marte has a better arm. I think Marte might have one of the best arms in baseball.

As for Pedro he needs to get better plate discipline. I know that will come as he matures. If he can see pitches a little better and get good contact I think he can be a annual 280-290 average guy that could hit 30-35 HRs a year. That would be rock solid IMO. Hopefully he can get a little more consistant.

I hope not. It failed us down the stretch this year. We need something else.

Going to a couple games coming up...

April 18th vs Atlanta (got seats behind home plate on the edge of the upper deck)
April 20th vs Atlanta (Second deck along first base)
May 7th vs Seattle (Lexus Club seats with my wife for our anniversary! Our seats for when we're sitting are behind home plate at the start of the second deck)

Cool

How are them Lexus club seats? Ive been to probably 100 games at PNC and sat pretty much everywhere, but was always to cheap to even consider the lexus club.

First time I've sitting there. I won the tickets from a grab bag at Pirates Fan Fest back in December. I won those two tickets and the tickets for the April 18th game as well.

Value on the tickets for those club seats are around $70 a piece. They're literally right behind home plate if we're sitting in the seats. Otherwise, we get to chill in the club area and eat some nicely catered food and relax on nice comfy leather seats Cool

Dude you got lucky man. Lexus club are a lot more than $70. There are anywhere from $175-$300. You really came up with a steal. Look it up online.

My favorite seats are baseline box on the pirates dugout side. There are nice because they are about $32 and you get to be one of the first rows off the field with a great view, and it's right by where the players give autographs pre-game if your into that. Not to mention its a great opportunity for a foul ball off both right and left-handed hitters.
