Quote: | During his chat, Ireland dropped an interesting nugget I'd never heard in my six seasons of covering him. He pointed out it is a wise strategy to draft the expensive positions and "develop your own" instead of being forced to sign them in free agency.
The five highest paid positions in the NFL are quarterback, defensive end, offensive tackle, receiver and cornerback. The Dolphins could use an infusion of young and inexpensive talent at defensive end, offensive tackle and cornerback this season. |
The rest of the article is pretty good as it gives quite a bit of insight into the plan of Ireland and the Dolphins on draft day... _________________

All of the good pass rushers in this draft are either too risky or will be gone by 12. The top three OTs should be gone by 12 also. I think we should reach and take the lone playmaker of this draft: Tavon Austin. We've got ten other picks to round out everything else we need. This draft is deep at DB and in the trenches...perfect excuse to splurge on Austin in round 1. _________________

While I would certainly endorse signing Austin I think Miami will sign defensive end or CB. That LSU Defensive End reminds me a little of Jason Taylor. But I really think Miami will take a CB. _________________ "Yesterday Is History, Tomorrow Is A Mystery, And Today Is A Gift. That Is Why It Is Called The Present.""

QB, DE, OT, WR, and CB? Here is a list of Ireland's picks in the first four rounds since his tenure officially began:
2008
OT Jake Long
DE Philip Merling
QB Chad Henne
DE Kendall Langford
OG Shaun Murphy
2009
CB Vontae Davis
QB Pat White
CB Sean Smith
WR Patrick Tuner
WR Brian Hartline
2010
DE Jared Odrick
OLB Koa Misi
OG John Jerry
ILB A.J. Edds
2011
C Mike Pouncey
RB Daniel Thomas
WR Clyde Gates
2012
QB Ryan Tannehill
OT Johnathan Martin
DE Olivier Vernon
TE Michael Egnew
RB Lamar Miller
Looks to be mostly true. 3 of his drafts were very heavy in those positions and he's never had a draft where he doesn't take at least one of those positions in the top four rounds. _________________

Oh HELL YES !
LTs don't just fall off of trees in comparison to quality OGs.
We are so close, about 3 - 4 pks short of landing "that guy"
We have tangible assets in draft pks as well as players that don't fit or will be traded as soon as next season. (Devon Bess)
Bust a Move Ireland, get crackin !

Everyday that goes by I think we are going to go CB no two ways about it. _________________

Assuming "that guy" in Lane.....why do you feel he is that much better than the next one?
Only OT I'd move up for is Eric. I'd be totally fine with Kyle Long and Terron Armstead. |

I'd be happy with that....I wouldn't pass on Johnson if he fell to 12, but I hate the idea of moving up (something Ireland doesn't do in drafts). I really like Terron Armstrong and Kyle Long....both are very athletic, but still "raw". _________________

Fischer is the guy I would move up to go get as well.
But at the same time I'm not comfy with taking a guy like Kyle Long at 12.
We might get lucky if someone is tired enough waiting for a QB to drop on them & gotta have one.
Those moves often times can trigger an avalanche but if there is no worthy pass rush specialist or OL I'd rather trade down.
There is no way anyone is going to talk me into drafting a CB at #12, I find that to be ridiculous, I'd rather draft Eifert at #12.

I can see not drafting a CB at #12 if you think that there just isn't any CB available that grades out in that range, but for any other reason you do draft a CB high IMO.
We have a need for a CB in a big way, second only to OT.
If we can't get an OT at #12 then CB would be the next position to look at, and if none grade out in that range it's on to pass rushers IMO. |

And neither of which will be a left tackle at the next level. Just saying. _________________ -Proud 2011 Inductee to FF's Miami Dolphins RoH

Armstrong will be....Long is a RT in the NFL (maybe a G)...
Armstrong and Johnson are very similar....if Armstong played in a program he would be considered a 1st round pick. _________________

Oh I realize we need another starting CB or 2 alright.
But my position is more from a philosophical standpoint of our 4/3 Deff approach.
Why on earth would I draft a CB at #12 when we play a bunch of Zone Deff !?!?
That's absolutely Assinine in my opinion, you acquire elite front 7 & really good Safety's.
Otherwise to me, it's like shopping for high performance tires, to go buy a used car & work a newspaper route.
Hey I was the one who raised holy hell when we let M. Nolan & the 3/4 walk outta here.
I absolutely LOVE the 3/4 with Bruising Thugs at CB, but were just not that Deff anymore.
Were a bunch of "athletic, pesky Nolan Carrolls" flying around.
