Next move: Brandon Weeden being shopped around for a possible trade.

I agree with the comment above that suggests that Campbell will beat out Weeden in fair competition. I actually think Campbell, while not a superstar QB, is far better than Weeden. If this IS the case, they'll keep the low cost McCoy over the 1st round cost of Weeden.

Except you have the costs backwards!

Sigh, this has been so many times, why are people not getting this.... Confused

So, McCoy makes more than Weeden..Really? (it might be, I don't know, I didn't actually look at contract details, simply assumed that didn't make a ton of sense).

Yeah, the way their contracts are structured, McCoy will make more than Weeden this year. Weeden got a pretty hefty signing bonus, but that's already been paid, obviously.

Weeden's 2013 salary: $750,000
McCoy's 2013 salary: $2,325,000

FWIW, The reason for McCoy's salary being so much higher is that McCoy met incentives in his first 3 years.

FWIW those incentives were based on snaps taken

He wont fit with Norv imo- but I hope we do get a later round pick for him- he should have some value and a team like the 49er's with 1,000 picks in this draft and donate one of them to us Laughing

I expect to get nothing for him, but I might actually stand and clap when he is officially gone. I liked many of the things that HHS did while here, but QB was not one of them. Too many poor decisions trying to get below average QBs to perform better than their ability.

When the report comes out that he will be released or traded for a late round pick, no one is gonna trade for him lol.

Unless they SERIOUSLY want him and are real far down the waiver list.

I appreciate all the Colt has given to the Browns, but I'm not sad to see him go.

Happy with the signing.

Met Campbell a few years back when he was still with the Redskins and I recall him saying that he studies 8-hours per day (playbook, film, etc.), not including working out or throwing the football.

Not sure if this is typical or if he was exaggerating, but I was impressed. Hopefully he can be a great addition and either push Weeden to be better or help us as a stop gap to a long term solution.

I thought we didn't have to eat Weeden's guaranteed money if we traded him?

With the new CBA, most 1st round picks' contracts are fully guaranteed.

Weeden's contract is fully guaranteed for the first 3 years, then all but $400K is guaranteed in the 4th year.

I believe he had no "offset language" in his contract, meaning we will owe him the guaranteed portion regardless of the team he's playing for. Can't find a link to verify, though.

Do you mean we will have to count it against our cap space as opposed to "owe" him?

His contract would be paid by the team that trades for it I would think. But I could see how it would still count against us as far as cap space.

If we cut him, yeah we would owe him his money.

"Offset" is in regards to cash paid to players, not cap space.

If the contract has no offset language, the player can collect salaries from both teams. Double-dipping, so to speak.
