Quote:
Dolphins coach Joe Philbin is "excited" about second-year FS Kelcie McCray.
A 2012 minicamp star, undrafted rookie McCray missed his entire first season with a broken foot. McCray goes 6-foot-2, 202 and ran 4.55 at last year's Combine. He could push Chris Clemons for Miami's free safety job this summer

Joe Philbin is excited about Josh Kaddu and Kelcie McCray. He ran a 4.47 40 so he has some speed. I like his size at 6'2 202.

He was compared to players like Bernard Pollard and is said to be good in run support and good in coverage. His weakness is his pre snap reads.

McCray could be a reason why we didn't see much of a push for safety in free agency

McCray was an UDFA last season, that's too high of an expectation. We resigned Clemons, before FA began, who had a better year than many other free agent safeties.

It may be high expectations, but Philbin really likes his upside. As well as Kaddu. Ireland's late round and undrafted players have been pretty good.

Well I cant say that I know anything about K. McCray but puuting things into perspective...

If our Zone Deff was too much intellectaly for the likes of Vontae D. imagine how much tougher it is for the leaders of the secondary as Safety's ?

I would have to imagine if Philbin hung on to this kid he will get his chance this summer to make the roster.
Specifically on STs ! as depth.

And if he can economize us a draft pk then he'd really be useful down the rd.
We shall see

Couple of points....

Having difficulty with pre-snap reads may have nothing to do with intelligence and everything to do with college coaching. It is very possible that he was never called on to read the offense in college and it is something he was learning how to do while with the Dolphins.

Clemons performed very well last season, but was also unspectacular...in baseball they call it having chrome or "flashy" play... Clemons lacked chrome and maybe Philbin feels McCray (or another FS) could add that play making ability.

Either way competition is good...it will either push a player to perform better or allow the team to find that gem...

The Dolphins have one of the league's better safety duos. There is just NOTHING behind them. McCray could be the third safety and paired with Jimmy Wilson could form a decent second unit and allow the front office to push off safety for a year.

To say there is nothing behind them without knowing anything about the young players behind them, is not giving the players justice. How many people thought Bess was going to be as good as he was when we signed him? There are a lot of undrafted free agents that turn into good players, especially with good coaching.

Supposedly the coaching staff was very high on him until he broke his foot. There is a reason Clemons only got a 1 year deal. That may be because they are looking to draft a safety, or they want to give insurance for McCray.

If we had one of the best safety combinations, CLemons would have been back for more than a 1 year deal.

Former Arkansas State stud and big time hitter, watch him be the starter by midseason.

A quick google search told me his biggest issues coming out of college were his footwork and pre-snap play recognition. Both are fixable with good coaching and we have Kevin Coyle who did a lot for our DBs last season.

So we'll pretend like a guy who was drafted to play S but has been reduced to a bad cornerback for both of his seasons is depth. We'll pretend like an UDFA that broke his foot one week into his training camp and missed the season is depth.

Basically my point is you need to add a rookie in the first four rounds and a vet minimum guy that has experience. Wilson, McCray and vet minimum battle for 1 spot (2 if more than one of them ball).
