A league source said the Bears have signed former Broncos linebacker D.J. Williams to a one-year deal two days after cutting off talks with Urlacher.

Very good signing for the Bears, IMO. Cheap, too--$900k base salary, none guaranteed.

Great signing for them. I was hoping Baltimore would sign this guy, but no such luck and honestly it would've just been a luxury for us.

Have fun with this clown. Good on the field, headache off of it. Not to mention, our best defense in years came without him playing.

Very good player if he gets his head on right. Low-risk high reward.

The good news is there is no guaranteed money. Worst-case-scenario, he becomes Evan Rodriguez' designated driver. Razz

That would be worst case. For everyone.

Is this guy starter quality? Chicago Tribune is saying the Bears have found their replacement for Urlacher. 900k doesn't seem like starter money, regardless of the off the field issues.

I didn't know Smith was on the market. He would have been a really good add.

You mean the guy who posted pictures of the teams defensive audibles on twitter...and the guy you provided non- human urine for his drug test?

Who knows what he still offers as a player...but at least he can still provide a few laughs. So I am glad he found work.

Did they actually sign Williams? Or did he just dress a sheep up in his clothes and get it to sign for him?

The amount of money isn't based on his play, it's what he does off the field. I'm sure Emery put it in his head that he'll be gone if an off the field incident occurs.

Good MLB for cheap. Very good off-season for the Bears.

He is a starter-quality player, absolutely. He is an decent player on the field. It's yet to be seen what off-the-field shenanigans he does next. It's not starter money because he was relegated to the bench after his suspension, they are just buying low.

I wouldn't necessarily rule it out, although I would consider it very unlikely. DJ Williams has played OLB in the past, and with the loss of Nick Roach they don't have someone to start at SLB. Possible that they sign both, but most likely not. I think they sign DJ Williams, and draft a guy to play MLB in the future, and he splits play time with JT Thomas at OLB until the end of DJ Williams' contract.

Anyways, when it comes to the signing itself, I'm happy with it. He came cheap, is very talented and is very low risk. Gives flexibility in the draft, so they won't be required to take a LB in the first round like I thought they were planning before this signing. Good move, Phil Emery.
