A league source said the Bears have signed former Broncos linebacker D.J. Williams to a one-year deal two days after cutting off talks with Urlacher.

Very good signing for the Bears, IMO. Cheap, too--$900k base salary, none guaranteed.

If this is its an excellent replacement athletically for Lach, and would be a stop gap to an early round LB taking over next year.

From the Trib:

"Williams, 30, was cut by the Broncos after a season in which he faced two suspensions, a six game suspension for violating the league’s performance enhancing policy, and a three game suspension for his second arrest for driving under the influence."

He served both those suspensions last year, yeah?

Wow, I thought for sure we weren't going to touch him since he had his suspensions last year. Hopefully he pans out.

Availability has been the question with him. He can certainly play. I don't know that it keeps us from going LB early but certainly gives us more options. Would definitely make it so we could take the best available LB, not just a MLB, if we are to add one in the draft.

yeah, at that money, great stuff. I saw he was a FA and became intrigued. Was NOT aware of his off the field stuff, suspensions, comments, etc until somebody posted about it on here. Its one year though, not a lot of $, I really like this a lot.

He can play SLB as well so that leaves us open to adding a MLB or SLB.

$900K w/ no guarantees is a good # for Williams. When he's on the field he's a very good player. I'm still targeting Bostic in the 2nd round, even w/ this signing.

A guy not getting talked about quite as much as Arthur Brown or Ogletree, but I think Bostic and Khaseem Greene are both great options in Round 2. Might allow us to go G in the 1st.

I wanted us to bring in a guard or lb and they moved quick to go LB. Thinking if we can't trade down in the first and the guards aren't there, it could get really interesting.

Looking at it from purely an on-the-field standpoint, $900,000 for DJ Williams compared to $2m for Brian Urlacher is a much better deal for us.

I like the move, would still hope we draft a linebacker in the top two rounds who can start at SLB for a year then, if he is ready, move to the middle when Williams' contract is up. That's easier said than done though!
