Free agent OLB Victor Butler will visit the Saints on Thursday.
It has already been reported that the Saints are high on Butler's wish list, and Butler has experience playing under DC Rob Ryan the last two seasons. New Orleans already has Martez Wilson, Junior Galette, and Will Smith as edge rushers, but you can never have enough of them. Beat writer Larry Holder adds that "mutual interest is high," and he would be "surprised" if Butler isn't signed.

GET IT DONE LOOMIS!!! Wink

PS: This is the third site that I've seen project Will Smith as a edge rushing OLB. They can't be serious can they?

Unless he's coming close to the vet minimum I'm really not super interested.

3 yr 3-4 million, I'd definitely take him. A little over vet min but that's fine for quality depth.

I'd be fine with that as well.

I am ALL for this move if and ONLY if this means Tez goes back to ILB.

NO! If Ryan puts Smith at OLB he is giving the other team the score. These analysts don't always know what they're talking about. I hope this is one of those times.

What we all have to remember here is that not everyone is coming in as a starter. We ALL need to move on from the idea of Tez on the inside, Reports out of Saints camp are that he will indeed be an outside edge rusher in this scheme whether we agree or not. So, as it sits we have two young outside edge rushers in Galette and Wilson who have limited experience as 34 outside linebackers and zero experience in Rob Ryan's scheme. Depth is a major concern at the position here, if the Saints were to draft a prospect at the position he as well would be in the same position as Galette and Wilson.

Adding Butler gives the Saints a young promising edge rusher with 4 years of experience as a NFL 34 OLB and 2 years experience in Rob Ryan's scheme. He would also add great competition to Galette and WIlson for a starting job and bring the best out of the group. Ryan would also find ways to get all 3 backers on the field at times in passing situations.

Above all else, Butler to the Saints would give the Saints options with the 15th pick. For all these reasons, I can honestly say that I feel the signing of Butler would be more impactful than that of Nnamdi's.

Butler doesn't give us any additional flexibility at 15. A decent pass rusher off the bench doesn't make OLB any less of a need. Nnamdi is a proven ALL PRO, Butler is good for 4 sacks a year off the bench. Nnamdi is without a doubt a more impactul signing. One has the potential to be a pro bowl caliber player, one might be able to give us some pressure coming off the bench...

woah now, I'm interested in signing nnamdi like the next guy. but make no mistake, if we have Butler on this team, there is nothing stopping him from working his way into the starting lineup (and not necessarily for injury related reasons either)

edit: potential-wise. nobody quote me about how I predict for him to start at some point in the season. Laughing he certainly has the potential to get to that point however.

Oh he certainly coul start, only because we have zero proven OLBs, but he'd be nothing more than slightly above average. He's an undersized pass rusher, nothing more. Nnamdi is most certainly a higher impact signing.

On a 3rd and 13 he could be a viable option to all out rush the passer and completely disregard the run. He has to be on the team to some capacity, and I'd rather see him attempting to pressure the QB than getting pushed around by big OGs and OTs in the run game.

How would you guys all use Smith? I think in the 3-4 the only option we have is to use him as a situational pass rusher.

Considering that we don't have a SOLB on the roster currently...I would have to think that he would become our best SOLB by default if signed. Not to say that the Saints won't pick someone else up or draft someone. AFterall, you do need more than two OLBs on your roster.

like this move, Butler is young, knows the system and gives some competition to our LBs. Shouldn't cost us a fortune either

I see Nnamdi helping if he's signed but I don't see him becoming who he was with the Raiders. That seems to be the thought process around here. Some feel that Nnamdi simply rejoining Ryans defense that he'll be what he was in Oakland. Were talking about a 10 year veteran corner that has lost alot of speed and confidence.

A help and solid addition, sure but on the Bust factor Nnamdi far outweighs Butler. At least butler gives us a young pass rushing specialist and depth at a need position and a value price at the worse. Nnamdi will likely come in with alot of pressure on his shoulders to be who he was in Oakland (just look at what u just said, Pro Bowl) and do it all with maybe the worst set of safeties in the NFL!

I think the guy is going to San Fran... Nnamdi would be a decent player but would never live up to the expectations at his age of what alot of saints fans think they would be getting.

He's better at this stage of his career as just a guy in San Fran than the guy in New Orleans.
