Damn that's a lot of money. We ever pay that much for a free agent before?

Foxworth was similar at 4 yrs, 28 mil

Dumervil's just about a lock for 10 sacks though, so we'll see. Like I said if they think he's worth it then I'm on board.

How can we pay $8.5 million in year one? I thought we only had around 7 million or so on hand?

Love the signing, instantly upgrades our D.

Just need to move Webb to safety and draft an ILB and SS.

Or keep Webb at CB and sign Huff.

Career season for T-Sizzle on its way!

Canty
Spears
Dumervil
..fingers crossed..Huff?

Very favorable cap cost to Baltimore on Elvis in year one: about $2.5 million.

I'm guessing his signing bonus is ~7.5 Million and year 1 salary is ~1 Million.

Wonder how much is guaranteed in total

Cap is $2.5 this year because Dumervil gets $1m salary this year, with $1.5m proration of signing bonus, adding up to $2.5m.

That's a lot of money. I'm surprised that the Ravens actually gave that kind of money to a free agent. They must be really high on him. Kruger only got $6 million more total and that's the same amount Ellerbe signed for in Miami. I'm not sure what I think about it right now. It does pretty much knock one need completely off the list though.

Doesn't perfectly work like this, but one way to look at it is that between Dumervil and Upshaw, we're paying a combined ~$7-8 million a year to get great-to-elite production at both pass rush and run stopping from one position.

While max value of Dumervil contract is $35 million, base value is only (only?) $26 million, per league source.

So basically, if we end up paying him $7 million per year, it'll be because he earned it.

Good way to look at it.

It's definitely a lot of money. Though Ozzie and co. must be extremely high on him to give him a similar deal to Kruger and Ellerbe (two homegrown guys).

He's a picture perfect fit for what we have with Upshaw and I think people (bitter Bronco fans) are downplaying/underestimating him. He may be a one dimensional player but I've always been greatly impressed with him as a pass rusher.

Yea this is very important. Also, I'm interested to see how much total is guaranteed. Wouldn't be shocked if years 1-3 are reasonable, and there is a jump in years 4-5, but those wouldn't be guaranteed at all.

YES.

More details
Quote:
@AdamSchefter

Elvis Dumervil got $1 mil base salary this season, plus $7.5 million signing bonus. He makes $8.5 mil this year, with cap number at $2.5 m.

Ravens also gave Elvis Dumervil $3.5 million injury guarantee on next year's option bonus, making it $12 million in guaranteed $ from BALT.

Well the entire contract has not been released quite yet. But here is the explanation for 2.5 mil in year 1.

7.5 million signing bonus / 5 years = 1.5 million cap hit / year
1 million base salary for year 1 = 1 million cap hit

Year 1: 1.5 + 1 = 2.5 million cap hit

He will hold a 1.5 million cap hit plus his salary plus other additives that haven't been released yet in each year, but depending on what is guaranteed and what is not, the dead money if we were to cut him may be limited to that 1.5 million per year.

I don't think he is being downplayed. A lot of Broncos fans have been calling for either him to at least take a paycut or be outright cut for a few years now.

I like this outlook, it's unusually positive for our fandom. Wonder if Upshaw feels the same way though.
