Patriots sign free-agent OT Will Svitek, colleague @FieldYates reports. Missed 2012 season with injury. Played well for Falcons in '11.

Missed 2012 due to injury, was decent to start 2011, went downhill towards the end of that season[/quote]

Training camp depth and a possible backup option I guess. Maybe an emergency option if Vollmer leaves.

I was thinking the latter, because he was the swing guy so if Marcus Cannon (our swing) goes to replace Vollmer at RT Svitek can be our swing or vice versa based on a camp battle between the two if Vollmer leaves.

Svitek isn't a starting caliber player other than as a Plan C or Plan D emergency option.

I don't think his signing has much bearing on Vollmer's chances of re-signing.

no but for the point you mentioned about him being a swing guy and cannon perhaps the plan b if plan vollmer doesnt pan out, i think this signing is an indication that the pats are just about ready to move on from sebastian broke back

Seems like a plan B in case Vollmer leaves, but if they do end up bringing back Sea Bass, a Tackle group of Solder, Vollmer, Cannon, and Svitek looks like a good group on paper. Plus there's Zusevics in the wings if they want to go heavy on OL.

Svitek (with some coaching *cough* Scar) could recapture that early 2011 form and provide solid depth at LT and RT.

Jeff Howe ‏@jeffphowe

"Svitek signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Patriots, according to a source."

Ladies and gentleman, your leading contender for the yearly title of "Patriots veteran lineman most likely to retire or walk away from the team during training camp".
