The Patriots made an offer to Woodhead, but the Chargers simply made a better one. Eight teams showed varying degrees of interest.

Denver always seems to have a problem with Woodhead, hopefully he isn't used correctly.

Looks like Mathews is a 2-down back again.

You guys just got the most clutch 3rd down back in the league, you're going to love him.

Woulda rather signed someone who could be a full time back (to back-up Ryan). I like what Woodhead brings but do we really have the luxury to bring in a spot play RB. Hopefully he gives us that Sproles type of change the pace but he's definately not as dynamic as Sproles. I'll give new management a chance to prove me wrong but I'm not too impressed this off season so far. Not exactly disappointed but not too impressed either.

We needed a Woodhead player, as Rivers uses a RB out of the backfield as much, if not more, than any QB in the league. Woodhead may not be an elite receiving RB, but he'll make the catches and get yards faster than Brown. That alone has a lot of value.

Our garbage Oline has had a lot to do with that. When our Oline was semi-decent a few years ago Rivers didn't throw it to our RBs nearly as much.

Rivers really does love his RB's. He took over as the starter in '06. Here's the number of catches by RB's since then

LT ('06-'09) - 56, 60, 52, 20

Sproles ('08-'10) - 29, 45, 59

Tolbert ('11) - 59

Mathews ('10-'12) - 22, 59, 39

Brown ('12) - 49

Bad OL, or not, Rivers uses his RB's as a security blanket. It worked great with Sproles and a healthy LT because they could make plays in space. Woodhead can do that too. Outside of trading to get Sproles back, and cutting Clary, this was probably the best move they could have made for Rivers.

^ Isn't that also an effect of the Air Coryell scheme?

I see I'm not the only Chargers fan looking forward to that...

It could be little of the scheme, but I think it's more of a comfort thing.

Everybody that reads this will laugh. I've been the one yelling and screaming that Clary should be cut since he got his first start.

I thought Clary did well when he filled in for Olivea in 2007. It wasn't till after 2008, I realized he needs to be replaced.

That's called the Toniu Fonuti Factor. No one really realized Olivea was bad (even Olivea) until after he'd filled in for Fonuti long enough to be bequeathed the spot. The same went for Clary. Because Shane plane so horribly after he got his big extension, no one really latched onto the fact that Clary wasn't "better" than Olivea, he was just different or "not Olivea" which made all the difference in the world. A year later folks finally saw the light. Laughing
