Cassel: "Christian obviously had a great year last year, they went 10-6. [The Vikings told me] he's their starting quarterback and they were looking to bring in somebody with experience who could step in if need be. The fact of the matter is, Christian's the starting quarterback. I'm there to help him, add value where I can, and go from there."

After a few days of really thinking about it, I think this was the best move Minnesota could have made.

We aren't really paying Cassel a lot of money. 4 mil per year to date is okay with me in a backup QB. I think someone like Ryan Fitzpatrick would have cost us more for relatively the same product. We did good with a cap friendly move.

Matt's starting experience is a plus too. If he really wants to be a factor to this team (and maybe get an extension to some point) he helps out Christian Ponder as much as possible. I've always believed that when you take the time to reflect on the words of others, you yourself can turn out to be a better person. For Ponder and Cassel, if they can find a working relationship, it should only help them both improve.

and now we have a more competitive roster with Cassel on board, at the expense of moving on with Joe Webb. I liked him, but the experiment just didn't go as planned. That playoff game proved as much. It just seemed far too clear Webb lacked the necessary traits to be a QB, and will now be looking to find work as a dual threat QB. Perhaps we can get some trade value for him, but it appears his days as a Viking are numbered. With Cassel on board, there will definitely be some (real) competition which should only bring out the best in both our QBs and our roster as a whole.

I like this signing. Hopefully things go as planned, and he can be another piece to the puzzle.

This is the attitude you want your backup QB to have. Cassel has been around and has learned from some sharp offensive minds, hopefully he can be like an extra coach out there as well.

Quote:
@TomPelissero: Matt Cassel's deal with #Vikings is two years, $7.4 million, per source. Cassel can void 2nd year up to 5 days after Super Bowl.

Quote:
@espn_nfcnblog: #Vikings gave QB Matt Cassel a $2M roster bonus. He'll also get a $1.65M base and total compensation of $3.7M for 2013. Top backup $.

Quote:
According to an NFL source, Cassel had a $2 million roster bonus due on Sunday in lieu of a signing bonus. His 2013 base salary is $1.65 million. He also has a $50,000 workout bonus and can make up to $500,000 in "not likely to be earned" incentives based on playing time and playoff wins.

Both sides have a built-in decision in the second year of the deal, which includes a $500,000 roster bonus due on the seventh day of the league year, a $3.15 million base salary and the same workout bonus and incentives as the first year of the deal.

If Cassel believes he can land more money elsewhere, he can void the second year of the deal with written notice up to five days after the Super Bowl and hit the market again. And if the Vikings decide they're paying too much for a backup quarterback, they can cut Cassel before the roster bonus is due without owing another dime or taking a cap hit.

The cap number for Cassel is $3.7 million in each year of the deal. That put the Vikings about $10.5 million under the cap pending the filing of receiver Greg Jennings' five-year deal.

It's very depressing to think that if ponder has a bad year next year cassel could be our starting QB in 2014

What is the other option? How could things have been better, after this season?

If Ponder is really, really bad, they have plenty of draft picks to move up and take a new QB in the draft, if they so desire.

So Cassells cap hit is $3.7M instead of $4M initially thought.
