Not a bad sign at all. They couldn't go into another season with Webb as back-up & Cassell can be decent to have for a game or two. Now if you're bringing him in to compete or be the starter, you got a major problem.

I think it's a good signing. If you are basing things off of last season though, Cassel looked so terrible I wouldn't want him as a 3rd stringer.

But I think a backup role will be a lot better for Matt. The guy is a great person, and a great competitor who is going to work as hard as he can to push Ponder in practice everyday. He just wasn't talented enough to live up to the expectations that were placed on him once he got that 63 million dollar contract.

oh wow! 1 play, well I guess I'm convinced. I don't really have anything against Ponder except that I don't think he's an NFL starting QB. He'd be a nice backup. I'd be more concerned if he got hurt and you had to start Cassel. Yikes. Cassel with the weapons currently on your team? eeesh.

Yeah i was thinking the same, probably wouldnt be hard to find a video of every nfl QB who has started games throwing a deep pass.

well, what the guy said was that Ponder can't do it, can't throw the ball downfield.

incorrect statement.

I'm so sorry I didn't realize that this was middle school were you do it one time and you're awesome.

Come on you're better than that. Mark Bradley, WR (OU) made an amazing down the field throw to Tyler Thigpen once upon a time. Guess he's great at throwing the ball down the field and all concerns of his QB career are put to rest.

I guess since you're old and can only understand things literally: Ponder can't throw the football well enough down the field with any kind of consistency that concerns a defense.

Yeah and having Michael Jenkins and Devin Aromoshadu as your deep threats had nothing to do with it. Laughing

The team might have told him that, but that probably means that Ponder will need to be absolutely terrible in the preseason and Cassel will have to play at a probowl level to even have a tiny chance at taking the job.

I dont understand the hate. Is cassel a great QB? No, absolutely not. But as a back up you cant ask for much more of a QB.

Starter experience? Yes.
Content being a back up? Yes.
Can play in our offense without it making huge adjustments? Yes.

He is the ideal backup for the vikes. Of course we wouldnt want him to start. But there are way worse options for a back up.

You people act like its easy to have a quality starting QB sitting on the bench as a backup. Rolling Eyes

Cassel isn't even a quality backup. Quality backups don't have the TO rate he's got.

0% chance that is accurate if we are being completely honest.

Brady Quinn or Rex Grossman would've probably been a better 'reaction'...

Nice try,

but no.

You can look up their respective career stats and see why you're wrong.

NFCC win.

Grossman: 1
Cassel: 0

Stafford: 0

Not sure how Stafford got in this conversation. Please stick to the subject at hand.

Time to get scared.

Is Jennings still talking to the Vikings? I think that was the last thing I hear about him

Actually I feel your only true receiving threat that isn't named Kyle Rudolph is Jarius Wright's deep threat ability. So I guess we'll see if Ponder can improve.

The only way he is the starting QB is if Ponder is hurt, absolutely no way he ever gets the nod over him. I wouldn't even play him over Webb tbh, and he was awful against us last year. He is sooooooo bad.

Cassel is a good qb. You just need to give him a good line that gives him a clean pocket, sure handed receivers who can get open and catch everything, a strong running game to take the pressure off and allow him to use play-action, and a strong defense that keeps him from having to win shootouts. If you do that he can be a very good game manager...

Or at least, that's what everybody used to tell me when I would argue that he stinks.

Why? They should let him compete and if Ponder can't win the job then so be it.
