Wes Welker and the Patriots are closing in on a multi-year contract that would allow Welker to finish his career in New England. An NFL source says that the two sides are hoping to have something finalized before the onset of free agency on March 12.

According to the source, the two sides have come to the understanding that they are far better with one another than without.

Welker played under the 1-year, $9.515 million franchise tag contract last season and ended up with another great season in which he made 118 catches for 1,354 yards and 6 TDs.

The league, the Patriots and Welker all know that the 31-year old is best suited to stay in New England and play under the Patriots scheme with Tom Brady passing him the ball.

Something TJ Houshmanzadeh, Deion Branch and others didn't figure out until it was too late. Good for Welker (and the Patriots)...

Knew this would happen. Welker is Brady's security blanket.

Not sure if I would do this if I'm NE, but then again I don't follow them that closely

Tom Brady set the tone by signing that lesser deal.
His troops will fall in line and act accordingly.

Seems about right. The market for slot receivers seems nonexistent in terms of value. May as well let him test the market and see what it gets him. I am sure his deal will be factored into Harvin's deal. What is the going rate for a top 5 slot receiver?

Mistake. Overrated scat back pretending to be a WR. Way too many critical drops and offers very little big play ability.

Good for him though. He'd be exposed as a fraud if he ever had to play in a real NFL offense.

I don't see why he'd leave. He's in a winning franchise that has fans that love him. Unless he is expecting a significantly better offer from another team or just really hates living in New England, I do not see why he would leave.

Good for the Patriots and for Welker. He's more valuable to the Patriots than he would be to any other team in the league.

Doesn't seem like a good move, he probably doesn't have very much value to any other team.

I think if the Falcons could get him with Julio and Roddy on the outside that could be a killer three piece.
