| Quote: | “We need to trade Peyton; we can get a bunch of defensive players and become like Tampa Bay or Baltimore," Polian said, according to Irsay.
And Irsay's response was precisely what you would expect from someone who wanted to deal Manning just six years
“Understand something, Bill. We are not trading Peyton Manning, period," Irsay recalled to Kravitz on Thursday. |
Quote from story...
Jim put Bill in his place!! _________________

| Bob Kravitz dancing on Polian's 'grave'. That is my assessment of this whole story. Not that I doubt this might have happened but how long was he sitting on this story? Is this why Kravitz was pushing for Polian to get fired for the passed few years? Seems to me like that was his agenda the whole time, after Polian gets fired throw out the gotcha story to prove he was right |

This is really a non-story in the lull between the Super Bowl and the Draft. All you have to do is look at the context. This was in the middle of trying to figure out Manning's massive $98 million contract. It was simply an outburst from a GM frustrated with the impending cap situation.
Nothing to see here. Move along. |

Never been a fan of Polian. He coasted on early draft picks (Wayne, Peyton, and Edge) and never built a good defense or OL for more than a few years. _________________

Totally lost in the whole story is this nugget from Irsay
LINK
| Quote: | (A quick aside on a question that’s been posed and heretofore unanswered: If the Colts had beaten the Jaguars that day and ended up with the second pick in the draft, would they have drafted Robert Griffin III and let Manning go?
Irsay said yes.
He would have drafted RGIII, but put him in a less run-happy offense. “I wouldn’t have exposed him to injury in the same way they have in Washington,” Irsay said. “My philosophy on quarterbacks is, first and foremost, you’ve got to keep them healthy and on the field.” |

Apparently in that story Irsay said if the Colts had finished 3rd or better, he would have kept manning. Thats interesting.
As for Bill, he's a General Manager. If you don't think they at least throw around the idea of trading ANY player prior to paying him the highest contract ever given to anyone at the position, then you're crazy.
Think about it, the San Francisco 49ers traded Joe Montana. The Edmonton Oilers traded Wayne Gretzky. If that can happen, anybody can be traded. Anyone. So he said in frustration that the team would have to trade Peyton ... I'm not at all surprised. _________________

I think too many people use hindsight to justify vilifying Polian instead of using the perspective of 2004 |
