The Bengals have $54 million in cap space.
Possibly the top DE on the market giving his age and size, Johnson recorded career high 11.5 sacks last season and also added an INT and 52 tackles.
***Update***
The DE franchise price tag is $11.2 million. _________________

Glad he is back. Hopefully we can get him in a long term deal this year. _________________

| Worthwhile, I think there would have been a bigger market for MJ than Andre Smith. But we need to lock up Andre long term now. I'm hopeful. |

Seems like most of the time that a franchise tag is used, that player ends up leaving the next year or year after. So to me, this is not great news. _________________

Best case scenario for us. Lets see him play at a high level again before we invest that much. I have a feel Sam Montgomery in the second round(second pick) is going to be very tempting for us ALA Carlos Dunlap.
I really don't want to lose Smith. If we do every mock until April will have us drafting DJ Fluker. _________________

| MJ shouldn't be unhappy with this since it just valued him as an 11 mil per year player. That will be the base price on a long term deal. Problem is that he's not really worth that much and if he plays 1 year on the tag, we'll have Dunlap and MJ both returning to free agency next year. Maybe Geno too. And we'd still need to get a deal done with Andre. |

| Glad he isn't leaving this year. Need to lockup him, Smith, Geno, and Dunlap soon. |

No way. I love MJ, but not at $11 million per year. And it won't be the base price per year on a long term deal. More like the signing bonus plus a much lower base salary, OR his salary this year (to create space in future years) plus a smaller bonus. Players don't average the franchise number on lonmg term deals, except for maybe QBs once in a while. _________________

No, if the team says he's worth 11 mil to them for 2013, he'll expect to average that on a longer deal. Players generally don't expect their pay to go down over time. If his choice was an 11 mil signing bonus on a 5 year deal averaging 7 or 8 mil per vs playing 1 year for 11 mil salary, the 11 mil for 1 year is a no brainer if the player is willing to take the injury risk. MJ is quite bright and financially aware enough to be set for life if the guaranteed 11 mil is all he ever makes for the rest of his NFL career. He's also bright enough to know that if he wants to maximize his career earnings, 11 mil for 2013 that includes a good performance will be a good start.
That's why some players don't mind being tagged and quickly sign the tender offer. Remember when the Raiders tagged Charles Woodson thinking it would buy them time to negotiate a long term deal and he was happy to play year by year on the tag? Same thing with Walter Jones. I expect MJ to sign the tender fairly quickly and participate in the team's offseason program whereas if he was looking for a long term deal at a lower rate he'd indicate his displeasure with being tagged, not sign the tender til training camp etc. |
