| Quote: | | Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew has maintained his team has a contingency plan if they cannot rework quarterback Matthew Stafford's contract this offseason. | Everyone kinda just assumes that the Lions will re-work Stafford's contract, but what if they don't/can't? That would put the Lions in a horrible place salary cap-wise.
If the Lions can't extend Stafford and bring down his cap hit and this impedes them from improving the team through free agency, and causes them to lose some guys that they wanted to retain- Personally, If I'm Mayhew, I'm spending every resource I have on defense this off-season.
Stafford will have to prove that he's worth $20M by carrying whatever he has on offense. _________________ Are you getting Ziggy with it? |

I was thinking about this yesterday. I know they shouldn't rush into this and agree on a one sided contract (to either side) but time is running out. We won't have a chance to be a "player" in FA like Mayhew said.
This renegotiation is very important for not only Mayhew but the entire coaching staff. _________________ 11 AAL: Ryan Donahue

Not sure how Stafford can sleep at night knowing on his rookie contract his is holding his team down by making more than any QB in the NFL despite having an average year or worse 3 outta his 4 years in the NFL. _________________

He isn't the highest paid QB and Mayhew engineered this cap hit through restructures. _________________

Sounds about right, except Nagy/Austin at RG.
The "contingency plan" for not being able to extend Stafford should be cutting all the dead weight this season so we have a fresh start at the cap next year. _________________ Football is love, love is life. |

How much of that $9.5M must be set aside for signing draft selections? Without Stafford's extension, the Lion's are really at a disadvantage. _________________ Are you getting Ziggy with it? |

I figure Backus is probably still around so it's probably something like this, though not too much better:
LT- Backus
LG- Sims
C- Dom
RG- Nagy/Austin/Reiff
RT- Reiff/Fox/Hilliard
Lions have been mentioned in regards to Andy Levitre in FA and Fisher in the draft so obviously could change and probably will. _________________

We may be at $9.5 Million under the cap, but I believe about $5 Million is set aside for draft selections, then there is the Tenders etc that need to be figured into that aswell.
Stafford needs a new deal, but the negotiations will take time, With Stafford coming off a below par season from what he showed in 2011, what is he actually worth?, He himself will be seeking a fair deal that dosent mean he is underpaid a few years down the line if he gets back to the 2011 Stafford. _________________

That dosent look like a foreword step on the OLine IMO. _________________

I think Fisher and Joeckel are currently very strong possibilities in the 1st round.
Resigning Hilliard is peculiar to me, not because they did it (I mean, he has been more reliable than Jason Fox, and actually looked passable when he's had to play) but because it's a two-year deal. I don't know why they didn't just give him a one-year deal as they usually do with roster bubble players. Fox is probably getting tendered too given he's a RFA.
I wouldn't be too surprised to see this:
LT - Backus/Fox
LG - Sims/Austin
C - Raiola/Nagy
RG - Reiff/Austin
RT - Fisher/Hillard
Which looks alright to me. Or if Backus quits then you put Fisher on the left side, Reiff on the right, and find someone to start at guard (Geoff Schwartz, Andy Levitre's name has come up, maybe just hope Nagy or Austin can handle it, draft a rookie in the 2nd-4th rounds). I know people don't like Reiff at guard, but I'd really rather have him there than Austin or Nagy, and I don't think they'd move Backus there at this point.
Stylish's lineup is really nothing more than a worst-case scenario where Backus retires and we don't manage to sign or draft anyone. We'll probably know before the draft whether or not Backus is going to retire, so that will clear up a lot of things and give us a more clear directive. No matter how it turns out, drafting a tackle at #5 looks pretty smart. _________________
