I have respect for Cross Country runners. I never ran anythings past the 400 in high school and the one time I ran in a cross country meet I quit 2 days laters. _________________

So both Howe and Reiss are now framing this as Demps planning to run competitively this summer and that having no impact on playing football. Personally, I don't see the big deal. I don't see there being much of an additional injury risk from this, and as long as he can get his weight back up in time, the only real losses are the ball-handling and receiving practice and the lack of change of direction drills, and he could probably very easily work on both of those in addition to his sprint training.
I think it'll work out that he can do it and play for the Pats next season. _________________ Shut up, NBT |

I'd be worried more about his weight than anything. |

I just know there aren't a whole lot of runners making $400k a year, or anywhere close to that. There's better longevity, but he'd have to be among the very highest to get anything close to that from sprinting.
In an ideal world, though, they'd let him sprint over the summer and then gain his football weight during training camp. Not sure Belichick would be okay with that, though. |
Yeah, forget just Belichick, no team is going to accommodate that.
As for the debate of running track vs. sticking to football, it really makes more financial sense to stick with football.
If he carves out a 5 year career as a depth running back and return specialist AND is wise with his money, then he should set himself up well for the rest of his life. 400k over 5 years is 2 mil.
On the other hand, unless he becomes more than consistent 9.90-9.98 type (which is what I'd expect he'd top out at), he's gonna have twice the longevity, but make far less than half the money. Prize money is hard to get in sprints, because the meets that a small fry like Jeff Demps could win are the ones that don't pay out. A guy like Darvis Patton probably makes 80k a year off of running. And sprinting is a young man's sport. In other parts of T&F its possible to run in your 30s - but a good career in football might even have a greater longevity than one in track for a 100m specialist like Demps. |
Maybe he just likes running more than football and money doesn't matter as much to him _________________

I have zero problem with this ? If Belichick takes issue with something which will not affect his football performance (which is up for debate I suppose) than he is just being a prick. If he will be int he same shape, dedicating the same time time to the same things, I see no problem. _________________

The point is it probably will. Give him a chance and see how he does, but its unlikely he can half-a** football and be in game shape this fall. _________________

Just for reference, here's Demps' schedule this past summer:
August 10: Runs in preliminary heat of the Olympic 4x100, presumably weighs 175 pounds
August 18: Signed by Pats
August 22: Makes training camp debut, says he's up to 183 pounds
August 24: Plays in preseason game, with three carries, two kick returns, and a punt return (plus a 24-yard punt return called back)
August 29: Six carries, three receptions, one kickoff return, and four punt returns
September 2: Put on IR with an ankle injury
I'm assuming he was 175 on August 10 because he's said that's his racing weight. If he was really 183 on the 22nd, then he put on 8 pounds in twelve days. In theory, it seems like the weight wouldn't be much of an issue. _________________ Shut up, NBT |

This is what concerns me. If he is running over the summer and it goes to August, he is missing OTA's, Minicamp, and some TC as well with very little time to get into football shape. The timing just doesnt seem right to me and I dont think any coach in the NFL would like a player missing that much off-season work for another sport. _________________

I hope he plans on giving back come of that guarenteed money if he's going to quit the Pats without playing a meaningful snap. _________________

If he wants to keep that schedule, he won't be long for the Patriots. No way will Belichick accommodate a guy missing camp or any football related activities. |

There are many guys all over the league who get paid without playing a meaningful snap. He's not giving anything back.
I don't understand when people say things like this. It's not our money going to the players. Bob Kraft probably spends that much money on a dinner. _________________ Yo, is that time machine done yet? |

No kidding. Last year the Pats were carrying dead money for such stars as:
Jonathan Fanene - $1,383,333
Robert Gallery - $500,000
Lee Smith - $128,610
Matt Tennant - $127,059
Joseph Addai - $125,000
Mitch Petrus - $95,294
Marcus Stroud - $75,000
Markell Carter - $70,539
Etc etc. Hell, they were paying Jeremy Ross $667.
They had over $22M in dead money, most of which was guys who never played meaningful minutes or hadn't played for the team in over a year (Banta-Cain, Bodden, Warren, Kaczur etc). |
