That's bizarre, especially considering that there's nothing in track remotely close to playing in the NFL until 2016.

For him, its a great move. There's more longevity in track than in the NFL. I ran track in high school and currently have little brother getting a scholarship to run track at Penn State and from what I have been exposed to there are many opportunities for runners like Demps to shine.

There are other major world track events outside of the Olympics, you know right?

In an ideal world, though, they'd let him sprint over the summer and then gain his football weight during training camp. Not sure Belichick would be okay with that, though.

Yeah, forget just Belichick, no team is going to accommodate that.
As for the debate of running track vs. sticking to football, it really makes more financial sense to stick with football.
If he carves out a 5 year career as a depth running back and return specialist AND is wise with his money, then he should set himself up well for the rest of his life. 400k over 5 years is 2 mil.
On the other hand, unless he becomes more than consistent 9.90-9.98 type (which is what I'd expect he'd top out at), he's gonna have twice the longevity, but make far less than half the money. Prize money is hard to get in sprints, because the meets that a small fry like Jeff Demps could win are the ones that don't pay out. A guy like Darvis Patton probably makes 80k a year off of running. And sprinting is a young man's sport. In other parts of T&F its possible to run in your 30s - but a good career in football might even have a greater longevity than one in track for a 100m specialist like Demps.
