| Quote: | | NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the Patriots are expected to "entertain offers" for Ryan Mallett on the heels of Tom Brady's contract extension. |

A 3rd round pick in 2011, the big arm Mallett fall in the draft after rumors of failed drug tests and other off the field issues, a team like the Browns might be interested giving their weak QB situation and the fact that front office man Michael Lombardi have showed that he liked Mallett in the past.
***Update***
| Quote: | | The Browns and Buccaneers have expressed interest in trading for Ryan Mallett, per source, but a deal seems unlikely at the moment. |

| Quote: | Multiple teams have called the Patriots this week about a potential trade for backup quarterback Ryan Mallett, according to three league sources.
Whether the Patriots will trade the 2011 third-round pick is the question. But all three sources said the odds are slightly stronger that Mallett is dealt than kept by the Patriots.
The Patriots have been heavily scouting quarterbacks in the leadup to the draft, and could very well select one during the draft. |
|
***Update***
| Quote: | | Source: The Browns have called again about Ryan Mallett. The Patriots want at least a second-round pick in return. |

If a team offers a decent 3rd, we would be silly to ignore it.
Pats fans and NE media have constantly overhyped QBs. Everyone thought Cassel warranted a 1st round pick, and that Hoyer was even tradable.
IDK who on Earth would trade a top 40 picks for Mallet, personally. _________________

Someone who sees him more valuable than a QB in this rookie class. He's only 24 and has learned under one of the greatest QB's of all time. Major reason he dropped was because of character concerns and the rumors about drug use. He's stayed clean.
I think we get a second rounder when all is said and done. _________________

He's not wrong though. The idea that Mallett is worth a top 40 pick seems crazy to me.
Now, crazy thing happen - plenty of bad GM's out there - but I'd take anything in the top 75 for him. Although, given how poor this draft is, I'd probably ask for a 2014 2nd rounder and settle for a 2013 3rd + a 2014 4th/5th. |

I could see Alex Smith destroying Mallet's value tbh. Looks like the most any team is going to send for Smith is a second, and he has a pretty solid pro-football resume when compared to an unknown quantity.
I think if a team gives up a second for Smith, the best the Pats get for Mallet is a 3rd and change. _________________

Well, teams have historically been willing to give up high picks for fairly unknown quantities. Whether or not flops like Flynn and Kolb have hurt that type of market remains to be seen.
Besides, once Smith is off the market there will be very few options out there. Maybe Matt Moore or a few other similar stop-gap guys but given how bad this class of QB's is, teams will be scrambling for someone with upside. It will be a seller's market for QB's this year IMO. |

Mallet and Smith are total opposites. Smith is older with a large contract and unimpressive, if not awful, resume outside of one season which wasn't even that impressive.
Mallet is more unknown, but his talent, age, and contract are all more favorable. _________________

Wouldn't be doing this if they had more than 5 picks in the draft, I'd imagine. _________________
