That's the one and I don't think it's tongue in cheek. |
The way he said:
"You guys will give me credit, right?" Made it seem like a poor attempt in humor, to me at least. _________________

Brady signed a great team-deal. He wants to win and recognizes that he needs to sacrifice some salary. Granted, he's a very rich man with plenty of endorsements, but still it's a great move by him. _________________

What the restructure did was convert salary into signing bonus and extend the contract; a strategy I am against with respect to the players on our team who have albatross contracts because it'll keep them on this team (as well as overpaid) for more years than they're worth without truly addressing the salary cap problem. No money on the cap > deferring money to later years. _________________

If the cap takes a big jump in 2014 or 2015 as expected, it's not a bad move whatsoever. The other thing to consider is that Brady didn't get much more in a signing bonus on the extension, so the cap hit won't be too high at the end of the day. Plus, Brady likely will play another 3 to 5 seasons. Smart move by the Patriots. _________________

The cap will receive very little increase in 2014. That was part of the trade off between the NFL and NFLPA for agreeing to the Redskins and Cowboys cap penalties. The cap was artificially raised for 2012 and 2013. The cap is only expected to go up about $1M next year. |

I'm on board with Gosselin but he and I don't know anything. With a scrambling QB like Romo, who makes things happen on the fly why would you even bother to invest in OL? You need more skill people.
Seriously I think we need multiple lineman drafted on both sides of the ball. _________________ Northland |

There's no way to lower the cap charge by $8 million this season if there isn't more guaranteed money, TSSS. His base salary was converted into a bonus. That's the "extension". The deal extended the length of the deal to compensate for the conversion from base salary into a bonus. As I said, we should not be doing that because we have too many average players on bloated deals. If we continue to allow bloated contracts to flatten out over prolonged periods of time, all that does is keep average players on the team longer than they can play, and it costs the team more money. Get rid of them. _________________

Yup. And the increase for 2015 is still unknown because there are other mitigating factors which will influence how it functions. But it's expected to be relatively flat for a few years. _________________

Brady's cap hit is still very managable. His contract likely will not have to be restructured again, as his cap hits will be between $13M and $15M. From 2015 to 2017, the signing bonus hit is $6M per year and he won't have any miscellaneous bonuses. If they cut him in the final year of his contract, they'll only take a $6M cap hit will saving $9M in cap space.
So regardless if the cap goes up or stays flat, Brady's contract is extremely team friendly and managable. _________________

So much for Brady taking a team friendly deal. |
It's all relative. It's not the huge cap savings, ultra team friendly deal it was advertised to be yesterday, but it still second tier QB money not first tier QB money. |

It is a team friendly deal.
Its one of the great disconnects in sports. The Salary Cap is an accounting measure, he took a deal that is friendly towards that accounting tool. In each year, he will cost roughly ~15 Mil against the cap. That is team friendly considering his open market worth. His contemporaries count roughly ~20-30% more against the cap on a year to year basis.
All that being said, he is still getting a boatload of guaranteed money. _________________

Actually it's a very team friendly deal
He counts against the cap $13.8m this year, $14.8m next year, then $13m, $14m and $15m after that. That's about the best cap hit an elite QB will ever give a team. Drew Brees and Peyton Manning are in the low 20's IIRC and Rodgers will be right up there after his new deal (not to mention Flacco). _________________
