No big deal.

Don't see any downside to it. Whatever works best for the future of the league.

Would help to kill the "dog days of summer" in the NFL offseason by pushing things back about a month. I don't see any downside and it could have a pretty big upside to making the offseason more active during the times that it used to be dead.

Make it earlier rather than push it back.

There are a lot of programs on TV during the winter months. What this would do is give fans a longer wait, but during months where they could be following hockey, or spring training, it's probably a good idea to wait until the spring where most of the popular programs have ended (save HBO/showtime).

To me, it's all about ensuring there is a smaller gap between pre-draft and the draft, and the beginning of OTAs and then training camp. If you can delay the beginning of the draft, you have a better chance of ensuring that your primary base stays focused for the duration of the offseason, rather than tuning-in in spurts.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/8973183/2013-nfl-combine-nfl-pushing-changes-offseason-sources-say

So, based on this, a possible off-season would look like:

Mid-to-late January, early February: All-Star Games (Shrine Game, Senior Bowl, etc.)
Early February: Main Invitees to Combine announced
Early-to-mid February: Regional Combines
Late February: "Combine Invite Winners" announced
Early March: National Combine
Mid-March to Mid-April: Pro Days
Early April: Free agency begins
Early May: Draft

I love the idea of the regionals becoming competitive feeders into the National Combine. If you're one of the "snubs," you have a chance to prove you belong. If you make it, you show up the Combine; if you don't, well, then perhaps you should be looking for another line of work.

The interesting thing with this will be how the draftees keep their focus with the extra time spacing things out.

As for people complaining about exams, oh boo hoo. Wink Laughing Seriously, the draft right now is scheduled for April 26th to the 28th. Early May (say the 2nd through the 4th) is one week later. Also, unless things have changed since I graduated, you're only worrying about Friday exams since the start of the first round is 8 PM on Thursday; you should be done by then.

As for the "more wait? no thanks" comment: you'd rather have the six/seven week gap that exists now between the start of free agency and the draft?

Exactly. This has nothing to do with more scouting for NFL clubs that's for sure. It's all about the mighty dollar in the long run. Move everything back a month for 2014/2015 and attempt to incorporate the 18 game schedule either in 2016 or 2017. It's coming.

Also keep in mind there would be less downtime between the draft and the preseason. I really don't see that big of a deal either way. The draft already takes place in late April. What's a couple more weeks?

Suffering from some football withdrawal at the point. Wouldn't be opposed to it.

The extra time would help teams that have overhauled their coaching staff to get prepared for the draft, also allow teams to wait for the result of the playoffs before naming their staff.

In my opinion they are a joke. In the last ten years there drafts sucked.

I don't mind this. Gives teams more of a chance to assess what they have to do during the off-season.

Meh, it's pretty clear that the union isn't going to allow an 18 game schedule to happen any time soon. I don't think they're doing it for that reason - it's still good as a standalone idea.
