All the penalty and stuff aside, how dumb does this make him look. I mean he goes and gets into trouble 5 days before the draft and screws everything he has worked hard for... not very smart. I sometimes just sit here thinking what is wrong with some of these kids. No common sense at all.
One thing to keep in mind is one doesn't always go looking for trouble, sometimes trouble goes looking for him. I don't know if the deck was stacked against Dennard in this case, but far too often are people put into said position and scrutinized from others who do not know the whole story. So I've decided to reserve judgment and hope that he can play for the Patriots the next several seasons.

***Update***
Dennard will be sentenced on Thursday, the link also adds: "Dennard faces up to five years in jail for his conviction, though generally such cases in Nebraska draw a 90- to 180-day sentence."

90- to 180-day sentence isn't great obviously, but it could have been much worse. They may impose a heavier fine in exchange for less time.

That's what's going to happen, they'll make a deal fines/community service/probation/Anger Management classes etc for no jail time. Almost a guarantee for someone on a first time offense with a good lawyer.

Agreed, it is a first time offense, the justice system in first time offenses weighs heavily in the likelihood of the offense being repeated. When you take that in and understand that it was just one punch, the judge usually puts it down as a momentary lost of reason. If he would have wailed on the cop and hit him more than once it would be different.

I think the Pats keep him around. This situation isn't THAT bad, not like running a cocaine ring or shooting yourself in the leg.

I'd be 110% shocked if the Pats cut him because of this. They drafted him in the 7th round knowing of this situation. And he only dropped so far due to this.

He'll get off on probation probably with a withheld sentence with 30-90 days as a part of that. I doubt he'll get anywhere near the max and I think he will be playing week 1.

High profile status with money. Not surprised at all.

Good news for the Pats.

Dennard must report on March 1, 2014 for 30-day sentence, but will get credit for three days already served

Quote:
Dennard also has to perform 100 hours of community service that is "law-enforcement related"

Quote:
Dennard can travel btw Mass. & Neb., travel for work (w Patriots); any other travel requires permission first

Quote:
As expected, Dennard will be ready for training camp. And don't expect NFL punishment - or Goodell will be back in court.

Dennard's case will be reviewed by the NFL, though no determination on potential punishment has been made

as @GregABedard has reported, NFL would have a fight from NFLPA if Dennard is punished since he was not NFL employee at time of incident

I wish he could go ahead and serve it. I don't want it affecting his mental game during the season.
