Are we even sure the 'assault' charge came from actually punching the cop, or might it just have been from slapping the cuffs away? Seems to me that if a guy like Dennard hit you, it'd leave a mark.

Assault is the single most ridiculous charge that gets made. Assault starts at the very bottom with touching. If I accidently touch someone getting off the train, that is, according to the law, assault.

It gets the stigma of being a punch or a slap, but most of the time it's just PC gone crazy.

The officer was on duty and was in uniform.

Stupid of Dennard to punch him then... if he did that is.

Prosecutors said after the verdict was read that they were not recommending a sentence, but that typical sentences for a crime like this would range from probation to 180 days in jail. The sentencing hearing is set for April 11.

From an article Reiss just posted on twitter.

Well, that's not too bad.

Yeah it was a bike cop that the department has patroling the bar scene.

Why does everyone think he will get away scott-free?? He was on trial for gods sake. He didn't enter a plea bargin, so theres no fine+probation+what ever else. Expect Dennard to be suspended also. ( I disagree with that notion )

The problem was the case against him wasn't necessarly good. The witnesses had different stories than the cop. The video didn't show anything. And the fact that the Cop said Dennard hit him didn't produce any cuts or bruising. All seemed weak to me. Personally I thought he would have just been found guilty of resisting.

If that story is true, then it proves further how the American Judicial system is terrible.

You get 5 years max for driving drunk and killing someone.

He wasn't in the NFL at the time, how could he be suspended?

Goodell can't set that precedent, SUCH a slippery slope.

Exactly...think of all the high profile rookies that would have been hit by that recently. The PA would never let that happen.

Well Kenrick Ellis in 2011 had the same thing happen and wasn't suspended, he wasn't a college player or NFL player at the time of his crime, like Dennard.

Does anyone know what the earliest the jail term would begin (assuming he can't postpone it) if he gets 180 days? Immediately after sentencing or what?

I am willing to bet that the "assault" was Dennard assaulting the cops fist with his face. I've seen it so many times that assault could boil down to anything, as others have eluded to.
