...seriously? I have all the respect and faith in the world for Payton, but, come on?
He said Vilma can and will transition to WOLB. That means you put Galette at SOLB. Do you really want Galette on the strong side? Do you really want An aged, strictly 4-3 LB, Jon Vilma?
No you do not.
I'm sorry SP, but that's just stupid. _________________

No, he specified outside LB. He said he wouldn't do inside as well. _________________

I dunno.... after taking a pay cut and as depth only. Then I wouldn't have a problem with Vilma switching. But I think Payton knows what he wants and I trust him to make good solid decisions when it comes to the overall improvement of our defense. I think of it this way, Payton is able to dissect defenses so the man isnt an offensive mind only. _________________

Payton said "weakside position" meaning hes the non blitzing OLB on the strong side.
Payton's linebackers are:
Jack Sam Mike Will
or
Blitzer Strong Middle Weak |

Yes, he said he felt Vilma possesed the instincts to succeed as an
OLB rushing in a 3-4. _________________

The way he said it specified starter, not backup/depth. _________________

Vilma sucks but Payton loves him. Who else sucks that Payton loves? Jenkins and Harper?
Even though I didn't really want him, I'd rather have Ryan call the shots on defense, not Payton. Handle your personnel and offensive duties, leave the defense to THE GUY YOU JUST HIRED TO COMMAND YOUR DEFENSE. _________________

I am also concerned. It's clear to me that Payton did quite a bit of learning about defensive schemes over the offseason...but he is still not there.
Vilma may have a role on this team...but it absolutely is not on the outside. He is NOT a pass rusher...and does NOT have the size to anchor the strong side. I even think that WILB is a mistake. You need your WILB to be able to defend the run consistently, because the RDE and WOLB will be busy trying to penetrate and rush the passer. Lofton is our WILB. SILB is best fit at Vilma where his responsibility would focus on his strengths in coverage and NOT run defense. He would have Hicks consuming blocks in front of him.
Hawthorne would probably be the smallest SOLB in the league. He may be able to anchor the line but he offers nothing as a pass rusher. He may be able to cover TEs...but will not be excellent at it. He will probably be one of the weakest 3-4 SOLBs in the league. It appears to me that the Saints want to run more of a 4-3 with a LEO position. Big difference from 3-4 one-gap.
My ideal LB corp:
WOLB: Galette
WILB: Lofton/Hawthorne (nickel)
SILB: Wilson/Vilma (nickel)
SOLB: Not currently on the roster |
