I'd like Idonije, but I think Kelly closed the door on him

I wouldn't say so. Bodies is what we need.

Bodies cost money. Do you think Idonije is going to sign a veteran minimum deal?

He's not, because he's more valuable than that. What are the numbers for Kelly's contract? Vet minimum type I suppose.

I know people are under this assumption that Kelly is Gerard Warren 2.0 but I'd be surprised if the team wasn't penciling him in for a projected big role in the defense barring a horrific camp or a breakout camp from one of the younger guys.

I highly doubt he got less than $1.5M AAV and wouldn't be surprised if it were $2.5M AAV - maybe with incentives. It's been a soft market, so it's possible he got a vet minimum deal but I'd be very surprised (though happy) if that were the case.

As posted in the Kelly thread, breakdown of his contract:
Quote:
2013
Base salary: $950,000
Workout bonus: $50,000
Roster bonus: $31,250 per game that Kelly is active (maximum value of $500,000)
Cap charge: $2 million

2014
Base salary: $1.95 million
Workout bonus: $50,000
Roster bonus: $31,250 per game that Kelly is active (maximum value of $500,000)
Cap charge: $3 million

http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/new-england-patriots/post/_/id/4741948/inside-kellys-two-year-deal

Quote:
QUICK-HIT THOUGHTS: Though the deal includes just $1 million in guaranteed money, the maximum value of $5 million is a reflection that the team doesn't view Kelly as a player whose play has dramatically dropped off as he enters his 10th season in 2013. One of the factors that the team likely valued about Kelly is his consistency, as he played and started in every game for Oakland over the last five seasons. If he can stay healthy, his roster bonuses are achievable and would result in up to $1 million in additional money. The most recent salary cap space update indicated that the Patriots had roughly $10.2 million in leftover space, and Kelly's $2 million charge for 2013 leaves the team with additional room to work with.

A few teams are still mulling decision on RFA WR Danario Alexander. Feeling is Chargers would match anything reasonable. Browns are a team to keep an eye on.

The Browns apparently the team mostly in play for WR Danario Alexander.

The Chargers gave Alexander the low level tender and he since he went undrafted, the Chargers won't get any compensation if a team signed him to an offer sheet.

I <3 Denario, but I hate how obvious it is that he is not as fast as he was in college.

I haven't re-evaluated the current players already on the roster. Are there any players that should/could still be cut if/when we may need to? I can think of Fells off the top of my head, although his cap hit isn't anything major.

When you've had five surgeries on the same knee, not to mention hamstring injuries along with it, you're probably going to lose some speed.

They save 1 million by cutting Fells.

Tough to cut Fells now if Gronkowski is going to be out for most of the summer into (maybe) September

Hernandez, Ballard and Hoomanawanui should be able to hold the fort until Gronk comes back.

I'd assume that Fells staying or going depends on Ballard's health more so than Gronks

The Patriots usually add at least one TE as part of their undrafted rookie free-agent signings aswell.

In the regular season, yes - those 3 should be fine assuming Ballard is healthy.

However, in camp (when Fells' cap space would be useful), they will need Fells. Hence "tough to cut Fells now".

Nate Washington would have been a very good under the radar veteran signing. I think he would contribute nicely here. He may be cut soon, with the lack of no trade interest for him. We'll have to see.

Winfield signed with the Seahawks to a 1-year deal.

James Harrison signed with the Bengals to a 2-year deal.

Chiefs might trade Branden Albert to Dolphins.
