Sure let's just discount the fact that classically the NFL was populated by seasonal workers and NOW is populated by year-round workers. There's no difference between someone who trains endlessly vs a guy that does taxes four months a year at all./sarcasm | Yep. Plus the legal, healthy supplements are significantly better and more widely accessible/used. |
Also nutrition and sports training has exploded over the past decade or so and what trainers know now is so much more accurate than in the past. I have no doubt PEDs are being abused but a lot of it is the advance in understanding of human sports physiology. Honestly, though radical, my ultimate solution to the problem is a boxing style weight limit, defined by position/adjusted for height etc... All of the safety protocols in the world aren't stopping the fact that force = mass * acceleration and that there is no way to control the latter. |

The NFL isn't doing anything. This is Bill Polian's statement and opinion only. He is a former member of the competition committee making a comment to a reporter. He said the NFL could look into the possibility again after it was shot down before. These are pretty vague statements with no timetable and Bill Polian doesn't speak for the NFL. _________________

I do not agree with it, but that would be the NFL's perspective as a business organization. |

this idea has little to nothing to do with player safety and everything to do with increasing revenue. this idea is not new... _________________

The pads don't actually help people? What? |
Pads/Helmets are definitely part of the TBI/concussions issue. They protect against soft tissue and bone injuries (ie skull fractures)...but definitely make the TBI problem worse. |

thats the first thing I thought of when I heard this, its not for safety at all. ( maybe safety does come at some point) but all that is doing is giving a player like Jamal Charles more room to get to the corner vs Patrick Willis. Its giving Mike Wallace more room to work with when going deep. All its going to do is make the average PPG drastically increase _________________

| The NFL is wanting to turn into the AFL.. Basically all offense and no defense. Which is almost there now. |

I wonder how many people in this thread that are against this safety measure are also against 18 game seasons because 'it's too dangerous for the players." _________________

At the same time, defenses could overcompensate for the pass, which would give way to a new generation of the running game (not debating this rule isn't an offensive advantage, just saying it'd help the run out as much as the pass). |

I would hope if this ever became a reality they would have the foresight to adjust coverage rules as well. Allow defensive players to be more physical in coverage. _________________
