|
|
|
| Quote: | In a continuous effort to create a safer game, the NFL could look into widening the field, similar to the CFL dimension. Former competition committee member Bill Polian told the National Football Post's Dan Pompei the league contemplated the move years ago and might do so again.
"It's a radical idea, but I think it's worth thinking about," Polian said. "You would have more space and perhaps a safer game. I say that based on my CFL experience. There are less collisions of that type in the Canadian game."
The Canadian field is 35 feet wider than the NFL's 160 feet. |

Widening the field would create more East-West running instead of North-South. I think widening the field can also play into the spread-option being adopted more-and-more in the NFL. _________________

Maybe everyone should just wear bubble wrap and play two hand touch. Here's a radical idea, how about mandating safer helmets to start. They need to stop trying to screw with football or people are going to get fed up. _________________

Or maybe players shouldn't be playing at 250-300+ lbs? _________________

| I hate the NFL so much. If I didn't love the Saints and Jags so much I would be wishing it to fail. |

Incredible mismanagement of this game. Incredible. I realize a lot of the stupid ideas haven't been passed and have just stayed stupid ideas but my word, some of them are just plain idiotic and don't even make things better in any way. _________________

Let's just adopt CFL rules and play 3 downs instead of 4. That would be less downs to get hurt too. _________________

We should just make every player wear 25lb shoes. Will slow the game down which will decrease the force they can hit each other with. _________________

How many stadiums actually have room to make their fields wider? _________________

Lets just keep playing around with little ideas than really hitting the heart of the problem, and that is the helmet situation.
go ahead widen the field, and when that doesn't work, get rid of kickoffs, and when that doesn't work, shorten the quarters to only 8 minutes, and when that doesn't work, we can go straight to 2 hand touch. _________________

At the same time, I really don't see what's so wrong about the idea though, it's okay in theory. More room = a bigger battlefield. |

And lends itself to a much different offensive philosophy, which in turn lends itself to a defensive philosophy shift. With extra width, you'll see more speed guys to take advantage and less "power" guys. _________________

bigger isn't always better.
Allthough, I'd imagine the whole option offense or wildcat offense could work very well.
Its all about reading the Defensive End or OLB. If you get past them, you could be going all the way.
So with that said, I absolutely hate the idea. The option offense only works when you have a QB who is a threat to run the ball, and can legitimately pass well. Those few succeeds. I don't want to see some jokester like Denard Robinson becoming a QB just to run an ultra simplified version of it. _________________

you guys get so worked up over little things...
it's just one owner suggesting it, and other owners have already said they oppose it. _________________
