It's the off season! Looks like it's time for my return to the forums! Gotta get my 2 cents in now since for the second time in 3 years I will be enjoying the Vikings season from the sunny sandy beaches of Afghanistan!!!
So, Audie Cole... I was not a big fan of him coming out of college, and I'm still not a huge fan of him. Don't get me wrong, I watched his 2 INT returns in the preseason, and while that can be taken into account as far as his ability, it in no way gives a true story as to how good he is overall.
Cole was a big dude coming out of college, but he still did not fill out his full frame. It will be interested to see if he filled up some between last years preseason and this upcoming year. In college he was a downhill tackler who seemed to play angry, but he still seemed like a boy playing a man's sport last year. He is not a coverage linebacker by any means, and that is largely what our LB corps is missing. Apart from Greenway, we don't have someone who can drop back and defend the pass successfully, which was completely exploited by Green Bay last year.
Cole could be used situationally, on special teams, and as a practice squad guy for now, but he is not an upgrade over Brinkley or Henderson at this point. I'm not going to write the guy off, for all we know having a year to get acclimated to the pro's will make a heck of an impact on the guy, but I'd think it'd be foolish to think that we won't be forced to look elsewhere this offseason.
