|
|
|
| Quote: | He has previous defensive coordinator experience with both the 49ers and Cardinals, where he ran 3-4 defenses.
Other than the Cardinals D in 2009, none of those defenses were particularly good but Davis is certainly an experienced guy who knows Chip Kelly's preferred system and who has ties to the organization. Davis' father was a LB coach here under - Vermiel and went on to serve in the Eagles personnel department.
Davis has a long NFL resume and has worked all over the league and all over the defense. While he has been a part of a lot different schemes, all of his recent experience confirms that the Eagles have indeed switched to a 3-4. He's also worked under 3-4 gurus such as Wade Phillips, Dom Capers & Mike Nolan. |

From the link above:

| Quote: | I will put together a depth chart for the Eagles based on current personnel.
DE Fletcher Cox
NT Mike Patterson
Antonio Dixon
DE Cullen Jenkins
. Cedric Thornton
OLB Trent Cole
.Vinny Curry
ILB Mychael Kendricks
Jamar Chaney
..
ILB DeMeco Ryans
Casey Matthews
Ryan Rau
OLB Brandon Graham
. Phillip Hunt
Everette Brown |
| Quote: | | Cox, Jenkins, and Thornton are all natural 3-4 DEs. They should do just fine. |
| Quote: | | NT is a complete mystery. |
| Quote: | | OLB is a partial mystery. |
| Quote: | | ILB would be fine with Kendricks and Ryans. |
Lawlor goes into a lot more detail about each position individually. _________________

Finding a NT is going to be imperative. _________________

Trading up from the 2nd into the 20s is a good idea to make sure we get Jesse Williams or John Jenkins....I like both of them, Williams a bit more because he seems like he is a little crazy....we could use a little crazy. _________________

I think well do the same thing were most likely gonna do at safety, sign a vet and draft one relatively high. _________________

Read it. That's about all you need to know. This is the direction 3-4 defenses are going in. True, 2 gap defense have been phased out and this new disguised 4-3 under is what is taking over.
The 49ers, Seahawks and Ravens all used similar concepts. It's almost like you just take your typical Jim Johnson front (you remember, right?) and you just stand the right end up.
...........[LB].......[LB].......[OLB]
[OLB]..[DE]..[NT].....[DE]
........[OT][OG][C][OG][OT]
Another explanation:
| Quote: | 1. The Middle Linebacker In Arizonas scheme, this player has to be stout, able to take on offensive linemen, get off blocks and make plays in the running game. The Cardinals employed Gerald Hayes (6-foot-1, 246 pounds) in this role.
2. The Weakside Linebacker The Cardinals needed a fast, explosive player who could get up the field in a hurry and bring down the ball carrier. The defense was set up to protect this player, so he wouldnt have to deal with blockers. The Cardinals used Karlos Dansby (6-foot-4, 250 pounds) in this role.
3. The Predator Essentially a pure pass rusher for the Cardinals. The Cardinals lined up Bertran Berry and Travis Laboy in two point stances, however, giving the appearance of 4 linebackers on the field. |
A perfect example of a "predator" guy who stands up but isn't really a linebacker would be Aldon Smith. The linebacker across from the predator is often used to blitz but is in coverage far more often than the predator, Ahmad Brooks is a great example of this.
The Ravens have been running this scheme forever. Suggs would be their predator while Adelius Thomas/Jarrett Johnson would be the guy opposite Suggs with more coverage responsibilities.
Dean Pees explains it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=cswGi6dEi3o _________________

Pete Carroll runs a similar scheme up in Seattle and before that down at USC. Link. Look at how protected the WLB is. Mychal Kendricks is going to blow up in this scheme, he'll be a star if everything goes right. _________________

I just like the idea that the 3-4 can at times disguise the 4th (and 5th if we blitz) pass rusher.
I know this will be a long road ahead, and we didn't hire the guy any of us wanted, but I'm excited for the switch. _________________

Would be nice but if Star is still there at #4, NT is a bigger need in this transition period. _________________
