New Orleans plans to hire former Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan as its new defensive coordinator, per league sources.

The Saints are switching to a 3-4 defense, they needed a coach with a lot of experience with the 3-4, which is what Rob Ryan is.

Should be a decent hire.

Happy to see this. I think he'll end up getting a HC job within a couple of years.

#Saints will interview Georgia DC Todd Grantham on Thursday and former #Cowboys DC Rob Ryan on Friday, via league source.

A source I truly trust says the hiring of Rob Ryan to the #Saints isn't a done deal.

Hmmm

Great move. He can give that defense energy and a new identity.

He was hired/not hired by the Rams twice already, and as I said before, I'll believe it when I see a press conference.

I just don't get the hoopla with him. He's never accomplished anything as a DC other than running his mouth. Every defense he's ever coached has underperformed, so it's an underwhelming hire.

If he wasn't Son to Buddy, brother to Rex and have the last name Ryan he wouldn't even be employed as anything more then a positional coach in the NFL. The hype around this scrub is amusing and has been for years.

Honestly, as I said in the other thread, I feel like he's a guy being brought in merely to install the formation change. Fans are going to want a positional coach from say San Francisco or Green Bay brought in, but there's really only two positional coaches of 3-4 defenses across this league I would trust to be able to both successfully install the scheme change and get the knack of effective play-calling in their rookie campaign as a coordinator (Keith Butler and Reggie Herring - and the later actually has experience play-calling and likely some semblance of an already developed playbook). It's simply not realistic to expect a rookie coordinator to be able to install a scheme change like that unless he, himself, has already been through the process at least once. Even Ray Horton had the benefit of not having to do a complete 180-type scheme flip in Arizona because Clancy Pendergast ran something of a hybrid similar to a 4-3 Under, where many of the players were already performing in similar roles to what they were asked to play in Horton's 3-4 "hybrid".

Decent hire....dont get why people call it a great hire.

I think he gets more slack because of his name and family ties. If not for that, Im not sure he would keep finding work. Not like his defenses are ever better than average, and theyre usually not even that.
