It's a story on NBC sportstalk but I'm on my phone and can't post the exact link ATM.
Edit:http://m.nbcsports.com/content/john-mara-cruz-asking-too-much-money-right-now
What does this mean?
Is there a possibility that Cruz leaves us before we resign him. I sure hope not as I think him and Hakeem work really well together when healthy. |

Its just talk as part of negotiations.
Cruz is a restricted FA, he is not leaving this year |

I know a man who knows Cruz.
He told me Cruz plans on asking for an absurd contract. 7-8 year at around 11 mil per year. |

Duh. That's how this works. He asks for a lot, you lowball him, then you meet in the middle. It's called negotiation. _________________

Let me give you my personal opinion, on what I think has happened.
It all started with the release of the coke machine in Brandon Jacobs. |

7 years for any non QB is crazy (even then its a little outrageous).
5 years is my max with WRs. Too much prone to injury out there.
5 years - 35 million is a fair offer imo. Maybe up to 40 million. _________________

Pretty much. I think both sides want to make this happen, so it will happen imo. _________________

This right there. I'm almost positive that he won't accept $35 million, but I could see $40 million working out. He really need to factor in the impact of the New York media. He is going to get a lot of opportunities and endorsements off the field if he stays in NY. He also grew up around there. I highly doubt he won't be on this team for 2013 and beyond. He should just realize he should give the Giants a somewhat team-friendly contract, especially if he wants to give the Giants a chance to retain Nicks too. _________________

Im sorry but this is very steve smith. Who is steve smith you may ask? Well he had one good year and demanded a crap ton of money.
Make him play for his money. If anything, hakeem is worth the larger contract. Less drops, longer years of productivity and a true #1 receiver. _________________

great move by John Mara making this public statement... its pretty apparent Cruz relishes the attention he has received in the NFL thus far and this publicity could hurt his public perception... Him asking for a lot of money is nothing so horrible to hurt his reputation or anything, I'm just saying he plays up the good guy, non-diva, team player role and this type of publicity will probably make him uncomfortable.
The Giants are clearly in the power position here because they can just give him a 1st round tender and retain him for 2013, buying them time. If Cruz wants this done he is going to have to come down and accept a team friendly offer or he will be experiencing lack of financial security for a few more years. _________________

If hes going to make stupid demands then hes going to just prevent anyone from improving his pay by giving him a more reasonable contract. In other words hes probably made himself stuck with accepting his RFA tender rather then giving the Giants a chance to lock him up long term. _________________ "well, they got X player I wanted but they clearly overpaid" is the battle cry of bitter and ignorant football fans

Antonio Brown (off his sick 2011 season): 6 yr, $43M --> $9M guaranteed
that to me seems to be the bar right now. _________________

So was his good year the 1500 yards with 9 TD's or the one with 1000 yards with 9 TD's? _________________

Pretty sure this (as others have mentioned) just part of the negotiation . But hate seeing articles like this, makes me nervous...
We really should keep both Cruz and Nicks, although I'm not sure our cap situation is favorable for that.
Is Nicks due to be paid next year as well? |

I'd give Cruz that contract in a heartbeat. If the Giants could get him for that, they did a great job negotiating.

Nicks is due to be an unrestricted free agent in the 2014 (next offseason). Cruz, if given the restricted free agent offer this year by the Giants (very likely), will also be an unrestricted free agent in 2014. So it's looking like the Giants will have to either make a decision to keep one or try to keep both in 2014. Just cherish their possible last season together in 2013. _________________
