Can't quote twitter and other things from my work computer, but Haslem basically said the following today...
We will have a QB competition
Don't expect us to be big spenders in FA because we have said we will build through the draft.
Both of those comments confuse and honestly faze me a little bit.
How can we not spend in FA.
I mean seriously. Banner is known for it. We have the 3rd most money and a ton of holes. Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh _________________

Just started the same thread, nug. I nuked my thread, but I'll copy what I wrote:
| Quote: | "I think Norv and Chud have been very open that they like a lot of what Brandon (Weeden) does, but we're going to have competition at that position, and I think competition makes us all better and we'll see where that competition comes from.''
ALSO
"I don't think you'll see us making any big splashy, high-priced moves because I think we've said all along we're going to build through the draft.'' |
http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2013/02/cleveland_browns_owner_jimmy_h_6.html
The QB part really isn't surprising, but I'll admit I'm a little surprised by the FA comment. We'll see how much of a straight shooter Jimmy is as we get to know him better, but these statements seem pretty clear to me. _________________ Cleveland Browns: We put the fun in dysfunction.

I'm cool with extending Mack and Ward and maybe even Haden, but we gotta get some players. _________________

Generally new GMs like to trade down in the draft to gain more picks to get more of "their" guys. If there was an opportunity for Banner & Co to trade down in this draft I fully expect them to do it. You can get the same guy at 15 than you would at 6 this year. Couple that with no second rounder I see a recipe for a trade down. But it takes two to tango. _________________

These comments don't phase me at all. 90% of the time when a team goes after the "splashiest" of free agents it really doesn't work out, most recently Mario Williams and Scrabble. He didn't say we won't get players to play key roles for us, just not the most expensive (overpayed) ones. We have a cap floor we need to hit so we will spend money, first and foremost it tells me they will key in on our own players who we don't want to let walk like Alex Mack and Ward for instance, maybe even Phil. I think there are plenty of players that will be available that wont break the bank that we could use. _________________ "If you can't stand the neural activity, than stay out of the neural activator" -Professor Fink

Spending big money on FAs is not the PIT way, which is Haslam's grounding.
Love the idea of a competition and wouldn't be surprised if we draft or sign a QB in FA, which is ok so long as it is not Anderson. _________________ Everything happens exactly the way it is supposed to happen...otherwise, it would happen some other way |

This doesn't concern me to much. we simply have to spend just to hit the cap floor.
Just means we are not looking at the superstars who cost to much in FA anyway.
We will still be adding at least a couple starting Quality players or we simply wont get near the cap floor. _________________

Probably get young players in free agency in the 4 million a year range. Forget most likely the 7 million a year plus guys. _________________ browns and indian fan 7272

one we need a QB competition. No one should ever have a starting spot locked up. Competition makes everyone better.
I think when he said something about spending money in FA, I think he was saying something like signing several big name players. I think they will spend money to build depth and fill holes but i dont see them spending money to bring in starters. I think they want to build through the draft and use there money to lock up there talent. _________________

I'm cool with extending Mack and Ward and maybe even Haden, but we gotta get some players. | Ward, Mack, Sheard, & Taylor could all get some cash to bump the salary up to the floor. Front load those deals so that they have money to attack FAs once they are a piece or two away. Really cool infographic on the guardian today breaking down NFL salaries: http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/interactive/2013/jan/30/nfl-salaries-team-position#cleveland-browns,cleveland-browns They will find a way to reach the cap floor without breaking the bank on unneeded FAs. That said I could totally see them dropping big money on one guy, I just don't expect them to go all 2011 Philly Eagles on us. _________________

With the rookie contracts you can not open up contracts until after three years. _________________ browns and indian fan 7272
