Riddler's 2013 Patriots mock draft - Version 1

Here it is! I'm not predicting trades as of now.
I provided links to articles pertaining to the players for more info.

1.29 - Desmond Trufant
CB 5'11'' 195lbs
Washington

After his outstanding Senior Bowl week, he has moved up boards and can now be considered the #2 or #3 CB in the draft depending on who you talk too, behind Milliner and possibly Banks. Even if Talib stays, the Pats need CB help. In a league where 3 starting caliber corners are key in a pass heavy league, Trufant paired with Talib and Dennard would be a formidable trio. Now imagine if Talib leaves. CB is a big hole, and I know most of us want DMac staying at FS.

2.29 - Marcus Wheaton
WR 6'0'' 198lbs
Oregon St

WR is another major need for NE. More specifically a deep threat to keep the safeties back off the short passing lanes. Wheaton was a track star and even beat blazer D'Anthony Thomas in a track meet race. He could move up considerably in value with a great 40 time at the combine, but he's a second round pick as of now. Being compared to Mike Wallace (without the drops).

3.29 - Cornelius "Tank" Carradine
DE 6'5'' 265lbs
Florida St

Would be going higher if not for an ACL tear in November. Had a breakout 2012 across Werner. Bolsters an inconsistent pass rush and could be the future DE across from Jones. 11 sacks in 12 GP this year.

7.? (From TB) - Denard Robinson
Slot WR/KR 5'11'' 196lbs
Michigan

After a dreadful Senior Bowl week, he has free fallen down draft boards everywhere and may not even be deemed draft worthy. He needs work, but he is a playmaker with the ball in his hands. Could be a steal as a future slot WR/Welker replacement.

7.29 - Braxton Cave
C/G 6'3'' 304lbs
Notre Dame

Cave could go higher with a good combine but is 6-7 round value as of now. Gives the Pats interior line depth which is lacking.

Final thoughts: I'm sure someone will ask why S and DT wasn't addressed. Well I think S will be addresses through FA, and BB spent a high pick on a safety last year in Tavon Wilson. With the signing of DT Armstead, i don't think that is a major need now, and depth might be acquired through FA. Thanks for reading Version 1 of my mock draft! Comments appreciated.

Denard Robinson? Yuck. We've had success transforming Edelman, but just don't think this is viable with all our other needs.

A lot of people think Mathieu will last till the 7th round, I'd rather take a flier on him than Denard.

Yeah the hate for Denard Robinson is coming from Ohio State fans so I wouldn't put too much stock in that.

Overall pretty good, love the upside of the later round picks.

Really don't like drafting a CB in the 1st.

If Talib is re-signed, it is likely to a fairly pricey contract. Investing a 1st round pick to be a #3 seems like a waste of valuable and (this year) fairly scarce resources.

Only if Talib leaves does a 1st rounder at CB make sense IMO.

You put yourself out there Riddler, I like the way your descriptions and how you arrived at the choice along with who you think the alternatives cold be. I like Vaccaro or Elam at the 1 but that's me.

Personally I don't think any of the safeties in this draft are going to be the best option at #29. None of them are really high end prospects (except Vaccaro, but he needs development and this team needs someone now). There's little separation between the top 5 or 6 guys in my mind, and there's still 10 or 12 guys behind that who are viable NFL options. I really think we should look to free agency to get a vet safety at a discount (Ed Reed or Charles Woodson) and draft one of the deeper options.
