02/14/2013 Pre-Combine Draft

For the purpose of this mock, I am making a basic list of roster moves and a conceptual draft idea.....

Franchise Tag:
William Moore

Cut/Retire/Do not Retain:
Dunta Robinson
Micheal Turner
Tony Gonzalez
Todd McClure
Brent Grimes

Resign:
Sam Baker

Free Agent Acquisition:
Cary Williams (Jenkins / Smith/ or best available DB by skill/age/etc.)

First of, I envision that most teams in the top 10 picks need a QB but will not pick one. I think they will take a chance with one of these guys with the their second pick. So, with most teams knowing and planning on that move, one team takes the leap and trades with ATL to get back in the first round at pick #30 to get 'their' guy. Please don't respond with eagles, or buffalo, etc.; instead, it was a team with an approximate trade value.

For the sake of the argument, I took Arizona at pick #7 who is projected and needs a QB. Just a run of the draft value numbers:

ATL trades their first round pick for az's second round and a swap of the third, points breakdown:

ATL gets pick #39 and #71 = points minus the swap approx 625
Az gets pick #30 and #94 - points minus the swap approx 625

In conclusion, here is the draft picks I have ATL selecting:

Round 2 (pick #39 from az) - Sam Montgomery - DE - LSU
Round 2 (pick #62) - Jordan Poyer - DB - ORST
Round 3 (swap #71 from az) - Gavin Escobar - TE - SDSU
Round 4 (pick #126) - Le'Veon Bell - RB - Mich St.
Round 4 (comp #131) - Hugh Thorton - OG - Illinois
(substitute any best available guard that falls to this position)
Rounds 5-7 - BPA or position as needed

If ATL trades their 1st rounder getting a 2nd and trading spots in the 3rd isn't enough. Arizona would have to give their 2nd, 3rd and maybe even a 3rd next year.

i agree we are dropping nine spots into the 2nd round and we are only moving up in the 3rd I think Arizona would have to do better than that !!

http://www.draftcountdown.com/features/Value-Chart.php

ATL
Rd 1, pick 30, value 620
Rd 3 pick 124, value 124

Az
Rd 2, pick 39, value 510
Rd 3, pick 71, value 235

With the projected trade:

ATL gets 510 + 235 = 745
Az gets 620 + 124 = 744

So....running the names, makes the trade "even" according to value charts.

The trade makes some sense, but taking players with work ethic concerns (Montgomery) and character concerns (Poyer) as our 1st two picks strikes me as unlikely.

I also fail to see the advantage of letting two players with experience in our scheme walk away only to replace them with a FA. I could understand a draft pick due to age balance (all 3 of Asante/Dunta/Brent will be 30+ when the season starts) but I don't see why we would not re-sign one of the two CBs.

If you don't mind me asking, how do you see our OL and DL shaking out? It wasn't 100% clear from your mock, other than Montgomery/McClure. Is Konz staying at guard; Are Walker/Reynolds returning etc.?

Oline, I see McClure retiring and Reynolds gone. I see us giving Baker a couple year small deal. Finally, I see adding a guard during the draft and making Konz our center. FYI, Mike Johnson is on his last year and we did spend a third on him.

Dline... that is our biggest need. Not sure how that pans out. Hopefully adding dynamic and effective pass rushers will help out DT package.

Don't like it to be honest. You're creating bother hole by letting grimes and Robinson to. Cary Williams is an ok player but he's not at the same level as he other two. A corner in the draft would be a necesity rather than the luxury it is right now. Much better rbs than bell available, Escobar is extremely unlikely to last til the 3rd and I don't think Montgomery lasts to 39 as well.

He was picking a fight with the strongest individual in that group. Duh! Attack the Alpha Male and assume dominance.
