So Sean Payton says he will take his time searching for his new DC for his coveted 34 defense.
Translation...
I can't hire the guy I want right now because his season isn't over yet.
Ed Donatell, Jim Tomsula or Ted Monachino will be our next DC! All the Crennel/Mangini talk just window dressing.
Ed Donatell - 49ers, DB coach
Top NFL assistant who could finally get the most out of our talented but unproductive secondary.
Jim Tomsula - 49ers, D-Line coach
One of the best in the busniess. If you can get over the fact that he looks like a mob boss, he can get the most out of the enormous potential that is Cameron Jordan and Akiem Hicks.
Ted Monachino - Ravens, Linebackers coach
Highly respected coach that will be the next in a long line of quality Ravens assistants to make great coordinators.
Another option with reasoning could be if Georgia DC Todd Grantham is the target and it's been agreed that will our next DC, they could be waiting till National Signing day passes on Feb 6th.
I tend to agree with Pat Kirwan though who said on Sirrus NFL radio that if Crennel or Mangini were the targets then they would be hired already. He said usually when coordinator positions go unfilled this late it is usually because the main targets are coaching in the superbowl, even in the Saints situation.
It's important to note that rumor has it that the Eagles are very high on Ed Donatell and are likely to name him DC after the Superbowl.

Butler is my top guy because he has experienced so many 3-4 schemes that he will be able to adapt to our personnel.
Next, Grantham. He is the only guy on the list to my knowledge that runs a one gap. We have a ton invested in Bunkley, Lofton, and Hawthorne. You cab salvage these guys in the one gap. That would allow the Saints to either improve on oline or the secondary during the draft/free agency. Otherwise there will need to be huge investments in NT, OLB, and maybe ILB (though I think Lofton is good enough for either scheme). |

I want Mangini, the guy is one of the best defensive minds in the business and he did a very good job building that Jets defense. _________________

So, Crennel is getting paid by the Chiefs for the next two seasons because of something in his contract? Maybe he won't rush back into coaching, and instead take some time off. _________________

I think the logical choice is Ted Monachino. He understand how to put LB in position to be successful. They invested in Hawthrone and Lofton. Aleast try to make it work with them. _________________

I like your logic...
It always seems thats the case in many ways. The way I see it, if Sean Payton feels he needs more out of his DB's then he'll target Donatell, if he feels it's more important to develop Jordan and Hicks he'll go after Tomusla, if he's looking more at the development and improved play at the linebacker position then Monachino could be his guy, if scheme (1 vs 2 gap) dosnet matter to him and he simply wants an experienced DC then Crennel and Mangini top the list.
I think at the end of the day, Payton is going to interview alot of guys and the one who impresses Payton with his ideas of how to best utilize the young talent core of his defense will get the job.
I think that guy will have to be innovative and extremly smart to impress Payton. Mangini from what I hear is extremly smart and so is Ed Donatell and Ted Monachino. _________________
