vs. Chad Henne vs. Blaine Gabbert
These two are both likely to be let go by their respective teams this offseason. Both of them are clearly entrenched as backups behind two breakout stars from this past offseason.
So my question to all of you is... You are Dave Caldwell. You look at this draft and see no QB that will make it to us that can make an immediate impact. You see a couple QBs who you like and might target, but you believe these are guys who must sit for 1-3 years before they're ready to QB the team. So before the draft, in Free Agency, you have a decision to make. Who is going to be the Quarterback for this team over the next 1-3 years?
Alex Smith seemed to be the logical choice with Greg Roman as Head Coach and has proven the most, but we no longer have Greg Roman in the mix, and Smith may be partially a product of the offensive scheme. Matt Flynn has ties to Gus Bradley, but being a defensive coach, they probably aren't too strong. Blaine Gabbert showed growth and is one of the youngest QBs in the league, but it still feels like he is behind the curve where he should be. Chad Henne showed flashes of being a good QB, but they were muddied too much by bad fourth quarters and overall bad performances.
Some other names to possibly consider: Jason Campbell, David Garrard, Tarvaris Jackson, Matt Moore, Drew Stanton.
Clearly Joe Flacco is the obvious choice among guys scheduled to become Free Agents, but the odds that he even sees the open market, even under an non-exclusive Franchise tag has to be about .0000000001%, so let's not bring him into the mix. _________________

I really wouldn't want Smith, Henne, or Flynn. Keep Gabbert because he is young and did show a little bit of growth. If we are dead set in bringing a vet in, I'd go with Smith. definitely would not give up a pick for him though.
Don't think we can win a Super Bowl with any of the free agent qbs so, I don't see a point in bringing them in. Bridge? Meh. With Smith we may go 8-8 and miss out on a potential qb in the draft.
Always felt you should play the young qb. So if we draft one let him learn by doing. Basically ride or die with your young qb. If he rides then that position is fixed. If he dies draft another and hope this one works. _________________

i disagree with this. tampa & baltimore both won superbowls with guys i doubt anyone would have considered long term solutions. of this bunch, i think smith is the most polished qb & blaine has the most upside. my only issue with smith is how much $$ is it going to take to sign him? i'd rather use the $$ to bring in some proven o-line or defensive help & roll with henne & gabbert.
i'm not opposed to bringing in a young qb to be groomed though, if we follow the seatte model. They've proven that you can find guys in the mid rounds that can get the job done (that is...if you're willing to pass on the goat punter) |

Those are the exceptions. Who are the last qbs to win a Super Bowl? There hasn't been a game manager in a while.
Keep drafting them til you get one. _________________

Smith has more proven success, so I'd take him.
Don't exactly want either. _________________

Draft Barkley then sign Alex Smith. Sit Barkley 1-2 years behind Smith. _________________
