To create some discussion around here, I figured I would start this thread.

While Sean Lee has been a terrific player since being drafted by the Cowboys in 2010, he has yet to play a full season due to injury. In his short time, he has flashed amazing ability and looks to be capable of being one of the best ILB's in the game.

NaVorro Bowman has been as equally impressive. He has already been named an All-Pro twice and has been a key part in a dominant San Francisco defense over the past two seasons. He also hasn't missed a game yet since being named a starter in 2011.

So, if you had the chance to go back in time and re-do that 2nd round pick...who would you take and why?

As much as I like Lee, it's Bowman by a mile. No injury concerns and 2 years younger

Lee. Hes got the number 1 ILB in the league next to him. Theres just so much Lee does for our offense physically and mentally with all the defnsive adjustments, hes a smarter player.

I will stick with Lee. Both are great players, but it's one thing for me that puts Lee over Bowman for me. And that is his Football knowledge. He is a student of the game. He studies the game like no other defensive player (from what i have heard from multiple sources). He is like having a coach on the field. Speaking of coaches, I think he has had a tremendous affect on the development of Carter, ESP this season when Carter took over when Lee went down.

Let's injuries have not been the same. I don't think he is made of glass. It maybe the system that we ran, half our defense was on IR. I fully expect to see Lee compete for a full season this year with another offseason under our new Strength and Conditioning coach and you will see Lee is the better player.

Health issues and production due to health issues have made many believe that Bowman is leaps and bounds better than Lee. While he may be more talented, I am going to have to stick with Lee. What Lee brings a a true professional and leader of this defense is irreplaceable. He is a "true cowboy" and as long as he can remain healthy he should end up being an all time great. I also see him as a huge role model and should be in the discussion for the walter payton award at some point in his career just like witten. Im not going to say bowman is a bad person, because i really do not know, but i would never think of replacing Lee due to his incredible intelligence and leadership.

Until Lee can play a full-season, this becomes no-contest.

That said, if/when healthy I will take Lee.

Another question:

What if we had just stayed put and drafted our board?

Would have ended up with Jared Odrick, Sean Lee, AND Navarro Bowman instead of Lee and Dez.

Ok after that shameless plug... I will have to say Bowman. As was said earlier, he is younger and with less injury concerns. That's been the story back in college when they were both at Penn State too.
However, obviously both are phenomenal. Lee is rock solid and brings a crazy football IQ. And they are honestly the perfect complements for each other.
I remember on draft day screaming for us to draft Bowman too and not just stop at Lee... (I guess Bruce Carter isn't too bad though Very Happy )

The answer is definitely Bowman though. I think he was better in college and the pros so far too.

May as well have just gone and taken an entire Penn State front-seven at that point. Waited and gotten Still last year too. Laughing

Would they really have taken Lee AND Bowman back-to-back? I find that a little hard to believe.

Bowman was their #20 player on the board. At #90 he was far and away the top rated player the Cowboys had left. If that was the case, they better take him.

Bowman for many of the reasons already stated - younger, healthier, more productive.

Also, he really became a star when Willis was out for 4 or 5 games last year, and the 49ers' defence didn't lose a step with Bowman calling the plays. One could also make a strong argument for suggesting that Bowman is the better of the two ILBs in San Francisco.

I like Lee better, but voted for Bowman. Like WizardHawk said, Bowman has no injury concerns and is younger.

Let's take it a step further. If Lee can't play 16 games in 2013 would you resign him? I would not. He would cost too much for 6-8 games a year.

That is interesting and something that should be pondered. I would re-sign him, but would want the contract to be a lower base with performance escalators. Something like x number of games played gives Lee x number of dollars more.
