even though it is all speculative at this point, in examining our recent personnel changes from last year, what position squads have improved (plugs) and which ones are still our weakest (holes)?

I would say that the LB corps and the Guards still need upgrading. Everything else at this point just seems to need depth.

They upgraded at WR, QB, CB, DT, and OL depth, which were weaknesses last year.

In terms of team needs going forward I would rank them this way:

MLB
LG
RG
S
NT
C

I think you can add RB and DE to that list. Allen and Robison are 30+

Peterson will be 29 at this time next season and Gerhart isn't the backup running back I think we could rely on if Peterson went down.

here is how I would break down the depth chart right now:

QB| Christian Ponder | Matt Cassel | Joe Webb | McLoud Bethel-Thompson | James Vandenberg
RB| Adrian Peterson | Toby Gerhart | Matt Asiata | Joe Banyard | Jerodis Williams | Zach Line | Rayon Simmons
TE| Kyle Rudolph | Rhett Ellison | John Carlson | Jerome Felton (FB) | Chase Ford | LaMark Brown | Colin Anderson
WR| Greg Jennings | Jerome Simpson | Chris Summers | Erik Highsmith
WR| Cordarralle Patterson | Greg Childs | Rodney Smith
WR| Jarius Wright | Stephen Burton | Nick Edwards

T| Matt Kalil | Demarcus Love
G| Charlie Johnson | Jeff Baca | Seth Olsen
C| John Sullivan | Joe Berger
G| Brandon Fusco | Travis Bond | Tyler Holmes
T| Phil Loadholt | Troy Kropog | Kevin Murphy

DE| Jared Allen | D’Aundre Reed | George Johnson | Collins Okwu
DT| Sharrif Floyd | Fred Evans | Letroy Guion | Chase Baker
DT| Kevin Williams | Christian Ballard | Everette Dawkins
DE| Brian Robison | Everson Griffen | Lawrence Jackson

LB| Gerald Hodges | Marvin Mitchell | Nathan Williams
LB| Erin Henderson | Audie Cole | Tyrone McKenzie
LB| Chad Greenway | Larry Dean | Michael Mauti

CB| Xavier Rhodes | AJ Jefferson | Greg McCoy | Roderick Williams
CB| Chris Cook | Brandon Burton | Nicholas Taylor
CB| Josh Robinson | Marcus Sherels | Bobby Felder
S| Harrison Smith | Mistral Raymond | Brandan Bishop | Darius Eubanks
S| Jamarca Sanford | Robert Blanton | Andrew Sendejo | Jamaal White

ST| Blair Walsh | Jeff Locke | Cullen Loeffler

improvements:
QB - added Cassel, lost nobody
WR - added Jennings + Patterson, lost Jenkins + Aromashodu
G - added Baca + Bond, lost nobody
DT - added Floyd + Dawkins, lost nobody
CB - added Rhodes, lost Winfield
P - added Locke, lost Kluwe

LB could really go either way. Henderson moving to MLB is probably a better fit, but who knows how well Hodges and/or Mauti will step in. If Greenway gets hurt our LB's suddenly look dreadful.

Backup QB - Joe Webb to Matt Cassel is an upgrade

Starting WRs - Michael Jenkins, Percy Harvin, and Jerome Simpson to Greg Jennings, Cordarrelle Patterson, and Jarius Wright is an upgrade.

Offensive line gets one more year of experience and continuity together and added some young backups. Losing Schwartz hurt, but Fusco will have to step up as a full time starter.

The defensive line from last year returns, but has now added Shariff Floyd, Lawrence Jackson and Everett Dawkins to the rotation.

The Cornerbacks got better, hear me out. Sure we lost Winfield, but I think if MN runs more press-man Cook and Rhodes on the outside will be awesome and Robinson will move to the slot. MN might get a downgrade from the slot, but they improved potentially on the outside. Id rather have good outside CBs then slot CBs.

The Linebacker unit remains the same. Losing Brinkley really doesnt hurt, Erin Henderson should be fine at MLB if he has to slide inside. I think Urlacher would improve the unit.

The Safetys remained the same.

Kicking game is probably about the same, we will see how Walsh does in year two, if Locke can step in asap.

The return game took a hit with the loss of Harvin. CP will probably be asked to return kicks as a rookie, and if so, should be an explosive returner.

I still see the following long-term needs that werent upgraded in 2013:

1. QB (Ponder will resolve this ? in 2013)
2. Three down LB (MLB or OLB)
3. One technique DT (Floyd takes over for KW at UT)
4. Offensive Guard (LG)
5. Boundary Wide Receiver (does Jennings contribute on the outside or is he merely a slot receiver at his current age?)

better from additions: WR, DT, downfield CB, backup QB, P
worse from subtractions: slot / nickel CB
probably a wash: LB (which wasn't good to begin with)
probably better with age: starting QB (let's hope), RG, LT, TE, S
probably worse with age: DE
hopefully not worse from bad luck: K

top projected needs, top to bottom:

LB - even if one of the Penn State guys can start, they need youth and talent

DT or NT - along with changing DB schemes they may play 2 penetrating DTs instead of getting a Pat Williams style NT -- the last NT they brought in was Evans

DE - even if they resign 2 of the 3 FAs (I predict Allen and Griffen will be back) they need depth and youth

OG - if the developmental guys aren't cutting it

WR3 / WR4 - even if Patterson's great, need to upgrade Simpson

S - if the mix of young guys doesn't produce a viable starter alongside Smith

3rd TE - Carlson probably won't be back

3rd down RB - if we lose Gerhart, but wouldn't be surprised if he sticks around and makes himself affordable -- he's decent on 3rd downs, he's backed up AP effectively and he knows the system, plus FA RBs are worth nothing these days

nickel / dime CB - can be a mid rounder / depth pick as long as they resign Cook and Rhodes is good

If this roster had a top 10 QB in the league, we would be a legit contender.

If Greenway/Allen/Peterson/Robison play at a combined 90% of last year, when you factor in all the big improvements in the starting lineup thru the draft, further organic growth of our 1st/2nd year players of last year and the one real minus in Winfield, its hard to argue this is not a playoff team.

I'm willing to give Simpson the benefit of the doubt. That weird injury really seems to have caused some major problems for him. He was dreadful, but I don't think it's truly indicative of the player he is or could be when healthy. I still like the signing and we shall see.

Would it be Spielman's MO to extend Cook before the season or is Cook at the point that it's a wait and see approach?

I think Griffen is more deserving of a new deal, right now. I would guess that they will take a wait and see approach with Cook, he has missed so much playing time over the years.

Robison and Allen are must resigns, if they can get those done ASAP. Griffen should get his done during the regular season. Cook will probably test the open market, ala Phil Loadholt, and hopefully return to MN.
