from Mathieu himself: "LSU has a strong drug testing program and LSU went to great lengths to help me in my treatment and recovery. "

It's great that he got help, and is hopefully on the right road, and can find a role for himself on an NFL roster.

But he didn't play well enough to warrant a first or maybe even 2nd round pick, from what I've read. And he's smaller than necessary for the NFL. Correct me if I'm wrong.

My objection to Minnesota drafting him is that they need to find a quality CB who can play in nickel or dime packages, so they can't make a risky CB pick.

LSU coach Les Miles said he thinks Mathieu will be a big-time special teams contributor, although Miles doesnít sound like he sees Mathieu as a shutdown cornerback in the NFL.

Miles: ďHeís a guy who has spectacular ball skills. Iíve never seen him mishandle a ball. His vision for play, he anticipates the big play. If Iím an NFL team Iím going to look at him first as a punt returner, Iím going to look at him as a kick returner, and the opportunity for him to play in a number of spots as a nickel/dime corner. Heís a guy that we certainly root for [in the NFL.] Not unlike other people, there are things that he has to get right, and if he does that I think heíll have a very, very long NFL career.Ē

A lengthy ESPN the Magazine profile of Mathieu answers some questions and raises others, but the portion that will likely be of most interest to NFL teams is a brief description of Mathieuís mindset heading into the last game of his college career: The BCS National Championship Game in January of 2012.

According to the profile, Mathieu was so disinterested leading up to that game that he spent 14 hours a day sleeping in the team hotel, and he told his girlfriend, ďI donít even want to play.Ē

Mathieu did play, in a game LSU lost to Alabama. He still hasnít played in a football game since then, having been kicked off the team for multiple failed drug tests. Mathieu is quoted at length talking about the process of quitting marijuana, although NFL teams may not be thrilled with the fact that Mathieu says he still chews tobacco ďto take the edge off.Ē

Any draft pick spent on Mathieu is a completely wasted pick.

We've had worse just off the top of my head, Underwood,Williamson, and McCauley. Atleast he'd cover 2 new holes from this offseason, return man and nickle corner.

If he stays clean long enough to see the field. He also hasn't played the game in over a year. Hard to say, yet, than he's no worse than Williamson or McCauley

this.

this guy is both an idiot and has no work ethic or passion for football. and even if he had tim tebow's character he still is a 4th round CB at best.

This thread should have been set up as a poll.

I wonder what the fascination is with this guy.

He isn't exceptionally fast; 4.50 40.
He is too short and light to play in the NFL as anything but a return man, and most likely as a PR only.

He played well against some collegiate opponents, which might mean something.... in college.

He is promising to be a better person from here on, but is he saying that because the NFL draft is around the corner and he only has to pretend to be turned around through the draft days?

What would prevent him from reverting to his old self after he signs a contract ?

Honestly, I'm perplexed.

Supporters need to say something other than 'I think he is a good fit'. Really? 5' 9" 186 lbs, and 4.50 40 is a good fit for what?

Were you saying the same thing when we cut the 5'9", 180 lb Antoine Winfield?

Does Mathieu play nearly as physical as Winfield does?

Just because a CB is 5-9, doesnt mean they will be the next Winfield.

Mathieu is as close to Winfield's physically I've seen in a long while for his size. Add in Mathieu just makes plays, just watch the film. The stuff he does is unteachable.

He certainly plays physical. Is he as physical as Winfield? Is anybody?

He like Te'o seems to have a nose for the ball, and makes big plays. I would say his biggest on-field drawback outside of his stature is that he maybe tries to go for the big play too often.
