Tough bowl game and the nature of his positional value as a non-pass rusher. _________________

Poor tackler, who was only viewed highly for his story, which is why you see some Heisman voters wanting their vote back, but thats a different issue. The thing with Te'o as opposed to the various other scumbags and wrongdoers selected by and populating the rosters of various NFL teams, is that i think the 'intangibles' are a big part of what was driving Te'o's value. That is, his 'character', 'integrity', 'leadership', etc. were a key element of what teams/the media/fans liked about Te'o. The Urlacher/Ray Lewis/Troy Polamalu type effect, bringing a charisma and presence to a defense that helps 'define' it and bring it all together.
This whole scandal calls a lot of that into serious question...potentially turning a '+' into a big '-'. So you're left with just the athletic ability and on-field play, which isn't necessarily 'elite' on it's own...and then you're looking at a potential significant character ding on top of that.
With other guys, you're not necessarily drafting them to be a 'leader' on your team. You're drafting them to be a pure playmaker. I think it's a bit of a different scenario. |

It's such a weird, unprecedented scandal. I don't really care to comment on it.
But I have made a bit of a habit of watching Irish games over the years and the guy is a real difference-maker who makes those around him better through tenacity and effort. He's around the ball on almost every play. You could tell every player on the field fed off the guy. Not just this past season either (where all the heartache/scandal occurred).
He's great in zone coverage (something Seattle linebackers are quite known for), never misses tackles and plays downhill when not in coverage - sounds to me like a Daryl Smith type only with more apparent tenacity/obvious leadership qualities.
I know his measurables will weigh heavily on his draft status, but he'll be a steal if he falls to day two. _________________

With that kind of nitpicking, someone might just hire a murder on you. |

That's the real trick though. He has clearly stood out as that sort of 'leader' on the field...That's the 'intangibles' he brings.
But depending on how the details of this all shake out...will he still be viewed with the same respect by his teammates? Will he still be that sort of motivating leadership presense?
A lot of questions there for me. |

I think the off-field things get way overblown. When it comes down to playing football, what he brings to the field means more than something that really doesn't have anything to do with what these guys suit up for.
His kind of tenacity is contagious - in a good way. Te'o's imaginary girlfriend means little to guys who wear helmets to work. _________________

I don't want to comment on it too much, but his story makes a lot of sense to those of us who have seen it happen.
Before coming here, I used to post on the old Myspace forums (they're dead now, so I can talk about them), and there were a lot of "girls" that posted there. And as time went on, we found out a lot of them were fake profiles then too. This was 5-6 years ago, mind you. And guys were getting duped into catching feelings for them then.
It's all very possible that Te'o was somewhat awkward when talking to girls. We've all been there at some point, and even positive traits don't make up for the anxiety that people can feel. I think we all, since we post on here, understand that for a good majority of people it's easier to let themselves loose online than in person. If you don't believe it, go check out the relationship advice thread in This Aint Sports Talk. And he probably got caught up with this fake profile, they talked all the time, he was able to open up to her in ways that maybe he couldn't do in person and he caught feelings and let himself get duped.
I think teams are going to do their homework and they'll come to realize that he was just a young kid who was unsure of himself and wasn't careful enough. _________________

Doesn't change the fact that Te'o lied to make his story more emotional for people voting for heisman..... _________________

Doesn't change the fact that Te'o lied to make his story more emotional for people voting for heisman..... | Or he lied because he was embarrassed about how they really met and it turned into a Heisman story.
Do you know one person who would openly admit to a bunch of his football friends that he met a girl online and fell in love with her without ever meeting? Can you imagine how often he would be laughed at for that? They apparently talked on the phone every night. He would get picked on relentlessly, because that's what football guys do. So it makes sense that he would make up a different meeting story.
I'm not saying that has to be why, but it's a reasonable thing to believe. _________________

If he found out on the 26th, the Heisman voting/award was already over. _________________
