Well if Trestman is going to call the plays then this really could be just a glorified QB coach. Preferably one who is strict on mechanics. _________________

| Here is an interesting idea…in 2001 when Trestman took over as OC in Oakland his QB coach was now Stanford HC David Shaw…but an offensive assistant and then for 02 & 03 Oline coach was not Saints OC Pete Carmichael…but Saints Oline coach Aaron Kromer who is also out of contract this offseason…Trestman will more than likely gameplan, install & call the plays…bring in Kromer with the title of OC but in reality he is the Oline coach who not only knows Trestman’s scheme but has worked with one of the best offences in the NFL for the past 5 years. |

Also a possibility that they may not have an OC. Anybody know if Trestman had one in Montreal? _________________

Something else that woke me up at 4:00 in the morning was this thought…we have heard that Joe DeCamillis had interest in the ST job…I don’t think anything about Phil Emery is a coincidence and I’m willing to bet the subject of “if you don’t get the HC job would you be open to another role” came up…now if you look at the rest of the current staff I would say the next most likely guy to leave after Toub is LB coach Bob Babich due to his close friendship with Lovie…so was Mike Singletary’s interview Emery planning ahead and thinking he could bring Singletary in as a LB coach…he has worked with Ray Lewis, Patrick Willis & Navorro Bowman…now I hated the idea of Singletary as an HC but if all he has to coach is 7 or 8 guys on the roster he could be a fit…it’s a risk but the casual fan would love having one of the legends back in the fold…
I’m starting to think Phil Emery might actually be Hannibal Smith |

I know he had one the first couple of years because they were talking about how the guy had been hired away by another CFL team on the radio yesterday but I don't know about recently. |

Since its on OC in name only and his roots are in the WCO, any chance they just promote Bates to OC? _________________

Hope not...Bates seems like a little bit of a yes man for Jay...we need someone to come in and be a little tougher on him. |

Most recently, he had promoted his OL coach (Pat Meyer) to OC. Before that, his OC was a WR coach...Expect either an OL coach or QB coach to be named OC. As you guys pointed out, it's a glorified position under Trestman since he does all the work himself. Personally, now that Trestman has been hired, I don't put much stock in that part of the equation. I'm more concerned regarding Marinelli's status. I want to see him being retained. _________________

Whoever is hired as OC is really going to be a sounding board for Trestman, a guy he can go to bounce his fresh ideas off of.
One of the things a CFL fan said in the finalists thread in News was the guy is never outcoached, if he loses its about the talent on the field. 2 grey cups in 5 years, 3 grey cup game appearances. He fits the initial criteria set forth by Emery which is that he is excellent in his role. A big key right now is making sure the defensive staff stays in tact as he has been known to fire DCs. _________________

All true... The other thing about his team in recent years, is that the offense carried the defense. The Al's were the equivalent of the Pats in the CFL. If you scored 30 points against them, they would score 40. He found ways to win games with a depleted defensive corps.
This is an ideal situation for Marc, the defense is still sound and he can leave it in Marinelli's capable hands (fingers crossed) while focusing on rebuilding the offense. Starting with Jay _________________
