What is the cap impact if Chase Daniel was to be cut in TC? How about Stanzi?

If released after 1 June:

Daniel 1M$ in 2013, 2M$ in 2014 (plus 3 M$ in REAL cash for nothing)
Stanzi: 53 k$ in 2013, 53k$ in 2014

Finally spotrac released 2013 contract numbers for Fasano, Avery and Schwartz. All added in the spreadsheet linked in the database.

What strikes me about the recent contracts:

All have most of the guaranteed money in this year (signing bonus & 1st year pay).
All have modest signing bonuses (max. 1 M$/year).
All have significantly rising base pays year 2 & 3.

So if the Chiefs are willing to write off the signing bonus they have a way to release these guys day 1 of the free agency period next year, declare TWO of them post June 1-releases (thus shifting all but one year worth of prorated signing bonus into the presumably more cap-friendly 2015) and start all over again.
Releasing the guys will be a REAL CASH-issue, not a cap issue. On the other hand: Keeping all of them will be difficult under the 2014 cap (unless there will be a significant raise), especially if you consider a bunch of current players hitting free agency (Albert, Asamoah, Arenas, McCluster, Moeaki, Studebaker, Jackson, Lewis).

EDIT: didn't consider S. Smith and his 6.75 M$ signing bonus. However: his contract is extremely modest for a STARTING CB if he sticks around. 3.45 M$ base salary in 2014? No guaranteed money until 7 FEB 2014.

Not directly cap-related but an excelent read on the adjustment of player salaries:

http://espn.go.com/blog/afcwest/post/_/id/56235/salary-cap-update

Quote:
Kansas City Chiefs

Cap room: $5.48 million

Comment: This does not include the deal for lineman Geoff Schwartz. The Chiefs can find some more room, but they’ve done a lot of heavy lifting so far.

According to John Clayton's numbers.

Cut Andy Studebaker and save $2 million and change.
Cut Copper and save close to $1 million.
Depending on what we do for the draft, I would think we need to consider signing a ILB, RT, C/OG not to mention find some cost effective OLB depth. Outside of Hali and Houston we don't project to have much of a pass rush presence.

Also, in addition to DAL, CAR and StL ... the Texans, Chiefs, Giants, Raiders, Saints, Steelers, 49ers, Redskins are under $5M in cap space.

I have them at 4.7M$ under right now - however, they'll need some money to sign their draft picks (they are good for that for now) and to pay training camp salaries (uuuhhuuuh ... not covered yet).

So the Chiefs will have to get creative with the cap.

Next year is a different story - I anticipate they'll be in a cap crunch then.

KC_Guy,
I am interested to see where you think we are going to be in 2014 when it comes to cap charges?

I did a quick crunch of the numbers from spotrac.com and came up with this :

Quote:
Name Position 2014 Cap Figure
Tamba Hali OLB $11,500,000.00
Eric Berry S $11,619,700.00
Brandon Flowers CB $9,500,000.00
Alex Smith QB $9,000,000.00
Jamaal Charles RB $4,833,333.00
Dwayne Bowe WR $12,000,000.00
Derrick Johnson OLB $4,250,000.00
Sean Smith CB $5,700,000.00
Dunta Robinson CB $5,350,000.00
Dontari Poe NT $3,087,274.00
Ryan Succop K $2,400,000.00
Anthony Fasano TE $4,925,000.00
Chase Daniel QB $3,400,000.00
Dustin Colquitt P $3,800,000.00
Donnie Avery WR ??
Jeff Allen OG $1,266,498.00
Rodney Hudston OC $1,115,577.00
Justin Houston OLB $837,812.00
Allen Bailey DE $808,986.00
Jalil Brown CB $772,325.00
Donald Stephenson OT $754,375.00
Cory Greenwood ILB $756,250.00
Ricky Stanzi QB $709,763.00
Devon Wylie WR $703,850.00
Jerrell Powe NT $673,170.00
Cyrus Gray RB $604,918.00
Nate Eachus FB $570,833.00
Tysyn Hartman S $570,000.00
Junior Hemingway WR $570,000.00
De'Quan Menzie S $555,613.00
Steven Baker OT $500,000.00
Matt Szymanski K $495,000.00
Lucas Patterson DT $495,000.00
Jose Gumbs S $495,000.00
Dustin Waldron OT $495,000.00
Alex Tanney QB $495,000.00
Mike Devito DE ??
Jonathan Baldwin WR $2,272,783.00

They don't have 2014 numbers for Avery and DeVito, but based on the players above, it looks like there will be $107,883,060 allocated in salaries for 2014 at this point. This at least includes the major salaries.

training camp salaries don't count against the cap do they? I though only the top 51 contracts counted against the cap.

Nic, just so other folks don't misread the above, that $107MM doesn't include prorated signing bonuses correct? Other incentives would go on top of that as well. That could easily put us in the red for next year.

Bigs, those numbers include base salaries, prorated signing bonuses and any roster/workout bonuses.

off-season pay (workouts & OTA, 560 k$) count against the cap when the League Year starts (that was 12 March). Training Camp pay (4.6 M$) counts against the cap when paid - in July/August.

I was on my phone last night so I couldn't easily include an example, but the 2014 cap charge for Tamba Hali is :

2014 base salary of $6,250,000 + 2014 prorated signing bonus of $3,000,000 + 2014 roster bonus of $2,000,000 + 2014 workout bonus of $250,000 = 2014 total cap charge of $11,500,000
