My personal belief is, you are going to get better quality next season. |
But it's still speculation. And there's no guarantee that says we will get those guys.
The worst case scenario is that we forego addressing QB this season, and give Foles the year. The Eagles finish around 7-9 with Foles looking very average, but we won some games due to good defense and Shady doing his thing. |
Do you honestly believe our D can turn everything completely around and allow us to finish with 7 wins next year? I don't.
I think it's more likely we 1 game in the division next season, 1 game against the NFC north and 2 games against the AFC West, TB and Zona.
It's a crap shot either way. |
We just don't know. But that's the point.
We do know we have #4 overall this year though. And we do know we can get a QB if we wanted. _________________

But I think Nick played well enough that he deserves a shot for better or worse to be the guy next year. He still need to be evaluated properly.
Also with this being a very bad year to try and get a qb it makes sense to use the resources we have to build on the other areas of the team that need work. Improve the secondary and oline this year.
Then look at where Nick is as a player at the end of next year and evaluate from there. |
I think there's always pressure for instant success. And QB being the most important position, it's not unreasonable for a new head coach to address quarterback first and foremost.
Andy Reid did it (McNabb).
John Harbaugh did it (Flacco).
Mike Smith did it (Ryan).
A lot of new regime head coaches immediately address quarterback. Foles earning the right to be evaluated for another year does not mean the new head coach believes he will offer the best chance to win, which is the ultimate goal. |
All of those teams needed qbs desperately though.
I'm not sure we even need one. |
I would say QB is a top need of ours.
Foles proved absolutely nothing. _________________

If Foles were being drafted this year as opposed to last year, were would you draft him? _________________

I wouldn't want to take him any earlier than we originally did, but I'd think his stock would be around mid 2nd. _________________

I think Foles is basically Trent Edwards 2.0. Short starting stint, then spend the rest of his career making friends with young QBs from team to team.
I wouldn't have taken Foles until round 4 last year, and round 4 this year too. I wouldn't draft him expecting him to be a franchise quarterback. _________________

Same could be said about our entire roster including McCoy, so should we cut all of them?...
Foles showed just enough that he deserves another full season IMO, he could potentially be a franchise QB. Handles pressure well, stands tall in pocket, good pocket presence, although he's pretty average everywhere else, I think he deserves a chance like I said. _________________

That's not the point. The point is he hasn't proven anything. If our new HC likes a QB prospect, he's not going to pass on him just because Foles needs another year of evaluation.
For example, if Foles did win every game, then you'd have a case. But since he did not, he is just as much a mystery as anyone else you could throw in there. _________________

We did keep the gm that drafted Foles though (if we believe what lurie says) not like Foles is a forgotten man in the novacare complex.
I think they give him a shot with only a veteran brought in as competition. _________________

I don't disagree with you, and I'm not saying Foles should be cut.
And no, you couldn't say the same thing about McCoy because regardless who the new head coach is, we KNOW FOR CERTAIN McCoy is a good running back.
We don't know that about Nick. The issue is, what HC will forego a QB prospect and a chance at drafting his own guy, to give a previous regime's 3rd round pick a year to prove himself?
It's not only Foles proving himself. Our new HC will also be trying to prove himself.
Would he entrust Nick Foles??? _________________

Also I don't think Foles really played bad enough to lose a lot of those games. The team around him found ways to lose those games. Was he perfect? No but I think he deserves next year to prove himself.
if he isn't the guy the new coach gets a new one next offseason if he is the guy oh hey one problem solved for the new coach he continues the building of the rest of the team. _________________

| This is my thoughts on the QB situation this year. We are stuck with Foles, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I think that the Qb's in this years draft are pitiful, and drafting one this tear would simply be impatient. The Eagles aren't going to the playoffs next year, lets see what Foles has got and go from there. If he doesn't pan out, we have a shot at Teddy next year. If a coach is impatient and drafts a QB this year, it will eventually be the reason he is fired in 3/4 years. |
