Bills Hire Mike Pettine as DC

Per PFT, and Chris Mortensen. Not sure how I feel about this. I really hope 1) It's not a move to "troll" the Jets, and 2) He has some knowledge of, and desire to run the 4-3.

Yah I really don't watch to switch back to the 3-4. Wasn't part of Mario Williams' contract stipulations that the Bills would go to a 4-3 and stay with it?

Aaron Maybin? Ha. This will extend Barnetts career forever. Puts Jarvis Jones at the top of my big board. With Mario Williams being more of a power rusher, I'd like to see him try DE.

I am so happy he isn't on the Jets anymore. Sucks you guys just went to the 4-3 and now youe going back to the 3-4(most likely) but i think this could be a good hire. With Gilmore potentially become a really good corner, that could be the cornerstone of the D.

A few questions if we go to 3-4..

1. Does Mario play DE, or move to LB? I would argue he has the strength to play 3-4 DE, though I do not know how he would feel about the presumable lower sack totals.. Conversely, in the year of 3-4 in Houston he had 5 sacks in 5 games before getting injured.. Either way works for me..

2. Who plays NT, Kyle or Dareus? The general consensus is Kyle inside, but I have to ask why? Dareus is PROTOTYPICAL for NT.. Are people arguing that he has too much athleticism to be wasted there? Kyle kind of falls under that category as well..

3. Does this improve Shawne Merriman's stock with us? Can he be a starter at OLB and successful?

4. Who would we draft, and would the scheme change trump others needs such as offense or (potentially) CB? Jarvis Jones will be picked ahead of us, and likely DaMontare Moore as well.. But Barkevious Mingo is a decent option for 3-4 OLB.. Margus Hunt from SMU is a solid looking 3-4 DE who could probably be had in the 2nd.. If we want to wait until the 3rd we have bigger names like William Gholston at 3-4 DE and Brandon Jenkins from FSU who could be a serious 3-4 OLB.. Lots of draft options..

I am interested to see how each of these might be answered..

I will be livid if we go back to a 3-4. Our personnel is better suited for a 4-3 and with some proper linebackers and some better coaching I think our defense could be a very effective 4-3 team.

Also just to note about the Pettine hire, its a great move by Marrone. it shows he is not intimidated by Rex and that he has some guts. Gailey would never had done something this bold.

Hope he runs the 4-3, we really don't need to set the development of our young guys back again by switching for the 4th time in as many years.

We have the personnel to run the 4-3 very effectively, we need to stick with it.

There's no doubt that our personell is better suited for an even fronted look, however, I think switching to the 34 would be beneficial long term for our franchise. If there's one thing I agree with so far this off-season, it's this hire of Mike Pettine.
