Lechler is a fan favorite, long-time Raider, and a great punter, but this is without a doubt the right time to move on. 1) He costs 3 x as much as your average punter- and double most of the the good ones 2) We have a good punter waiting on the IR/PS to take over. Punter is absolutely an important position, but considering we need help at so many areas that have a larger impact on the game, it would be extremely unwise to resign Lechler at the cost of signing a starting G, T, DT, DE, LB, or CB- because thats what we would sacrifice by keeping him. Lechler is great, I hate to see him go, but the time is right. A rebuilding team cant afford to pay a punter $4M a year. _________________

As great as Lechler has been, $4m is too much for a punter. We are making some good moves in the right direction. |
Generally punters aren't used as the fakes in a fake punt. If he gets licked then you are down a punter for the rest of the game.
Normally its the personal protector. _________________

True, aside from fake punt passes, in which case Lechler might be the best in the biz for that, seeing as he is a former QB. _________________

Interesting. 6'4 321lbs was on injured reserve this year. _________________
King is OBSESSED with punting the football. I have no doubts that he'll improve. So he shanked a punt in pre season action as a rookie? What's the difference between that and a rookie WR dropping a pass, or a rookie CB getting burnt? They get a pass, it happens. He showed enough potential to get an opportunity to battle it out for the starting spot.
Based on what exactly? How would anyone know that. _________________

Articles I read when we signed him. I'll post links when I'm out of work. _________________

Not to mention in his interview when he said at college he'd go sneak on to the field and punt until he got tired while everyone else was partying, and I read some other article about him getting up at sunrise or being up until midnight just practicing punting because he loves it so much. It shows too, I've never seen someone so excited over a pre season punt lol. He says it's a stress reliever. _________________

If he came back at around half his current deal I'd be all in but $4 million per is to much loot. |
No coming back, time to move on.
King looked in preseason just like Lechler looked all season long this year. Big inconsistent leg lacking any other skills such as directional kicking. |
Lechler had knee surgery in the offseason. It clearly effected him.
Raider fans want King because of 'swagger'. I loath the fact that 'swagger' has become a qualifying attribute for fans to fall in love with. |
I want him because he's younger, won't cost 4 million, and showed good potential. |
Exactly. I don't think swagger has anything to do with anything at this point. If we can sign a DT or CB with the money we save on Lechler not being back then that is more important than anything else. _________________

Weatherford, Mastay, Morstead, Sepulveda, Feagles, Hunter Smith
I think I have them Can't remember if Feagles was with the Giants still in '08.
But we get the point. You don't pay 4 million for a punter. That's Davis's doing.
But it's hard to land a consistent kicker/punter in this game. They slump and it can be ugly at times. |
You get an improved defense and the punter thing is moot. _________________
