Tony G again has stated that his chance of returning next year is about 5%... so with that said, here is a list of (more than serviceable) guys that could be cut due to salary, performance, team chemistry, free agent, etc....
1) Martellus Bennentt - 2013 free agent
2) Jermicheal Finley - due over 7 million next year
3) Vernon Davis - due over 6 million next year
4) Ed Dickerson - RFA
5) Travis Beckhum - UFA
6) Zack Miller - over 12 million
Is it worth taking a rookie TE high in 2013 draft? Thoughts? |

Heath Miller
Fred Davis
Jared Cook
Dustin Keller
All FAs
Personally, I'd like to sign either Heath Miller or Jared Cook. Neither would break the bank, plus we have too many holes that are more important that need to be addressed in the draft. _________________

Like what?
We need a RB and DE. Then depth really. No pressing needs besides those 2 and TE. _________________

I think RB, DE, and CB are more pressing needs, maybe DT, so I wouldn't want us to take a TE before the hopefully 4th rd pick we get for Lofton, and a guy like Ryan Otten probably isn't going to replace TG, at least at the beginning. Sign a TE. Use our first four picks on a RB, DE, DT, and CB, and the last three can be used for depth at LB, S, WR, or maybe QB. _________________

dream scenario:
sign Jared Cook/Heath Miller for TE
1rd:Okafor-Ansah DE
2rd:McFadden-Ryan CB
3rd:Taylor-Franklin RB
4rd:Spence-Logan DT _________________

We have 3 starting caliber CBs and 4 if Grimes stays. Not sure how that is a big need.
If I had my way we would get a LT in FA and a backup S in FA.
Draft go:
1. RB/TE/DE (BPA at those 3 positions)
2. RB/TE/DE (pick DE for sure if we didn't in 1)
3. RB/TE (which ever hasn't been picked)
4. DT (depth as we have some questions here in FA)
4c. LB (we need depth here too)
5. WR/C/CB (BPA at those 3 positions)
6. WR/C/CB (BPA at whichever was not taken)
7. WR/C/CB (whichever one is left)
Also wouldn't be opposed to doing something like Scar had and go BPA for a guy like Patterson or Austin early, that could be game changers. Similar to the Randall Cobb pick by GB 2 years back. _________________

-Asante turns 32 in a couple of weeks, and has been plagued with injuries all year.
-Dunta is not worth the 8 mil that he is scheduled to make next year, and it goes even higher in 2014 and 2015(I expect him to be cut after next year).
-Grimes is coming off a major injury, and it's probably unlikely that he would be back.
CB is definitely a need, and should be addressed before we get thin at the position. _________________

I think well be fine. That's my opinion. I see what you're saying, I just don't think we have as many problems as you think. I'm thinking this...
2013:
Dunta
Asante
McClain
2014:
Dunta
McClain
Asante
With Owens being our #4 and drafting a 5th. _________________

Dunta's played well, he's not worth his contract but that kind of stuff is on all teams (see Mario Williams). Asante played well and there are good old CBs in the league (Champ Bailey is almost 35). We are not keeping Brent. No mention of McClain. He could have started for half the teams in the league. _________________

We aren't going to pay Dunta 10 mil in 2014, or 11.5 in 2015, when he is 32 and 33. Paying him 8 mil next year is bad enough. 2013 is his last year with the team. We need another corner. McClain has been great in the nickle, but Owens was good for one year as well. We can't just count on him to be the long term answer this early. _________________

Even if we did cut Dunta I would be fine with our current guys to start. JMO _________________
