Question for our cap wizards.
I'm seeing Boldin's 2013 base at 6. If we extended him, we'll say 4 years 8 guaranteed with a 750k base in 2013, does that shave 3.25 off the cap number. Or is it more complicated than that? _________________

He has a $6M base with a $1.5 SB hit.
What we would likely do is turn that base salary of $6M into a signing bonus (making it guaranteed), and using your example for 4 years, $8M all guaranteed, it'd just be a matter of $6M SB + $1.5 SB hit from 2013 + $8M guaranteed for the extension all evenly divided over 5 years (2013 + 4 year extension) making it a $3.1M hit each season.
The extension just allows any signing bonuses to be pro-rated -- which teams convert salaries into signing bonuses to avoid the hit all in 1 season but rather spread it over a few. The issue long-term with such things (the Jets just ran into it) is that you're fully guaranteeing the money so cutting them will expedite the remaining cap hit of the guaranteed money all into the season in which you cut them. _________________
